I REALLY want Boston to win though, even if it seem unlikely, because it will be a summer games, which means swimming! I would totally go and watch. And by 2024 I should be able to afford it. Lol.
It's all about the prestige of hosting I think. H was just saying he'd love it in Boston so he could go see the volleyball matches too. I'd love to see swimming and synchronized swimming personally.
I'm in the "no way in hell" camp. They'll spend a crapload of money and waste it on stupid projects that will only be used for 2 freaking weeks. Most cities lose money. It will be so annoying and frustrating with tourists and traffic, etc. Boston is way too small to deal with the amount of people who will be coming. It will be an awful clusterfuck and I highly doubt the city will get any improvements that are really lasting or valuable for residents. Also, I have no idea how they pay for all the building projects, but I really don't want my tax dollars going into something that only lasts 2 weeks.
Yes, I know I'm a party pooper. I really, really, really hope we lose. Think of all the construction and traffic issus tha we will have to deal with for YEARS before the Olympics. And if it is anythign like the Big Dig, it will probably cost way more than they estimate and suck donkey balls.
I'm not sure how I feel yet. I don't feel very personally affected by it because I rarely drive or even take public transportation, and I'm not sure I'll still live downtown in nearly a decade. Given that there hasn't been a US Olympics in so long, I think it could be succcessful financially. But I would definitely want to see heavy use of existing facilities rather than complete new construction for everything.
Of course my condo board would propose an amendment to our lease agreement forbidding any temporary rentals/airbnb tenants this week! I live a stone's throw away from the proposed site of the Olympic stadium!

While I think it would be really cool to have the Olympics here and have the bragging rights, I cannot imagine what traffic would look like. I just do not think that Boston has the infrastructure to accomodate the numbers that the Olympics would bring in. It pains me to say that, but I spend a lot of time in traffic here going to work, going home from work, going to PA to visit family, etc. For example, the day before Thanksgiving, the Pike is INSANE. That would most likely be a walk in the park compared to Olympic traffic.
