DD climbed out at 12 months twice - first time we thought it was a fluke, the second she hit the hardwood - she was in a sleep sack, on the lowest setting, etc. We broke the crib down that night and put the mattress on the floor.
We're moving DS this weekend. He's climbed out several times. I apparently have spider monkey babies.
We just transitioned DS from a crib to a toddler bed at 34 months old. Nighttime is going great, but he refuses to nap there anymore. It's KILLING ME. So I vote transitioning earlier than almost-3yo, b/c LO could decide to stop napping (wilted).
We switched C at 26 months. I didn't want to buy a second crib for the baby, but we also noticed that he was squirmy and seemed to have trouble getting comfortable in his crib anymore. He was also really interested in our bed and covers and pillows, so we kind of ran with it.
We put him in a twin mattress on the floor and it's been a super easy transition. He loves having all the extra room and grins and jumps in his bed whenever we go to his room.
Easily? Or at least it was for my kids. Rest both armpits on the top rail, swing one leg up using feet or grippy feet of pjs for leverage with the other foot, climb on top of rail bike-riding style, swing other leg over and drop. I watched my son do that at 15 months. My younger daughter got a bloody nose when she slipped trying. My kids are all at the top of the height charts, so even with the mattress as low as it would go it was easy for them.

Yeah, I haven't seen DD try yet, but I feel like it's coming soon. I'm not sure she can quite rest her armpits on the top rail yet, it's kind of a tall crib, but she's also around 95th percentile for height I think so it won't be long.

If it makes you feel better, the transition was really smooth with all three and I have no regrets about doing it! My younger two didn't sleep through the night a single time in their crib but once they were in a bed they slept really well! I have wondered if they felt trapped in the crib honestly.

Oh, we transitioned DD at 23 months because she woke me up at 3 am from on top of her changing table saying 'MAMA' and I stumbled into her room and checked her crib and she wasn't there. I realized where she was and woke DH up yelling 'WTF' we moved her mattress to the floor for the rest of the night and moved the changing table to the hall as well. we converted the crib the next day and that was that. She actually did well for night, naps took about a week but after that it was fine until she gave up naps at 3
E will be 20 months old when his brother is born. Our plan is to have the new baby in our room for the first 4-6 months (which is how long E slept with us) and then move him to a twin bed when the baby moves to the crib. I am not opposed to buying another crib if it seems like he needs it, but I am really hoping he wont.

We bought a 2nd crib. I was not going to mess with my oldest's sleep at that age. I was afraid! My kids are 24 months apart and they actually only were both in cribs at the same time for like 2 months (DD2 was in the RnP until 6 months old). DD1 moved to a big bed when she was 2 years and 8 months.
