I work for a small company but I do get annoyed at DH's work shenanigans. He works for a very large company. - 2 weeks before DD was born both of his bosses left. One left the company entirely (to start a daycare) the other went to a different department. -the one that quit entirely was on medical leave for ~2 months earlier in the summer. The other one was supposed to be doing both jobs. Instead, DH did about 30% of the work of the one that was on medical leave on top of his regular work. -my entire pregnancy DH worked 60+ hour weeks. He had about 40% of the people he was supposed to have. Because of the workload (100% of each day's work has to be finished that day) he put off a specific training at the urging of big boss (bosses' boss). Also, the 3 months leading up to my pregnancy, DH's peer was on medical leave and DH did 100% of both of their jobs. -DH's company is one of 2 fortune 500 companies to offer paid leaves to dads the same as moms (12 weeks 100% paid). Not everyone takes the full leave company-wide but everyone in DH's department does. -DH, his peer and 1 other team lead (DH and peer are team leads but do 100% of training in addition to regular work) apply for the 2 bosses' jobs. Interviews are the week before I deliver (but I deliver a half week early). -Everyone tells DH and peer they are shoo-ins bc they take the most responsibility when the 2 bosses are out. DH has been designated in charge when the 2 bosses are out, over peer. -other CW is a problem child. Always making a ruckus, not developing his team, disappearing on work trips (branch visits) to take side leisure trips. -Only DH, boss who left company, and problem CW are the only ones besides HR that know that problem CW has been put on a PIP. -the week after I have DD, big boss calls to tell DH he didn't get the job. Peer and problem CW did. Her excuse - the training she made him put off. -despite working 60+ hours/week from November-December 2013-August 29, 2014 (more than making up the hours) DH is only eligible for 3/4 of what his bonus would be bc of his leave. Literally, they say your bonus would have been $10k but you only get $7.5k. -now due to reorganize, big boss is moved elsewhere and problem CW (now DH's boss) is pushing the new big boss to eliminate DH's former peer's position. -also former peer called DH at least 3x/week when he was on leave to ask DH questions regarding how to do his own job. So frustrating!!!
Both DH and I work in the oil industry in Houston and have been at our jobs for less than a year, so I'm a bit nervous.
I'm in this industry too and it's scary how quick things have changed with the market. Not a big deal but we were already told that no one is getting their raise this year. they are hoping not to lay anyone off but I feel like it will come to that. All the field contractors are being let go.
If I wrote memoirs about my last job, publishers would insist I call it "fiction".
Small companies have problems. Medium companies have problems. Big companies have problems. I think the key is to work with people who have some perspective about what's a problem and what's a PROBLEM, can shield you from the PROBLEMS and have sense of humor about problems.
