bear's daughter lives in your state with her mom. She's in 1st grade and is doing very poorly in school.
She can barely read, has very little reading comprehension, she doesn't want to learn math, she has concentration problems (she's always in trouble for distracting the other kids, etc). Not surprisingly, she will be failing the year. At this point, she's too far behind to pass for the year. But, instead of holding her back, the school is advancing her to 2nd grade. She'll be moved to a room with 2 teachers and fewer students and be started all over again and will be doing 1st grade work instead of 2nd grade. It sounds like they're holding her back, but not holding her back... or something?
Does this sound normal? The district where we live will just hold the kid back and make them repeat the year.
Her mom is very guarded and won't give bear much information. She's afraid he's going to take her for custody. Bear has a call in to the school, but they haven't called back yet.

Has she been classified? That what it sounds like.
They do this sometimes if they think the child will be able to make/catch up by mid year, but they way you are describing her that doesn't sound li8ke that kind of child.

Has she been tested for ADHD?
She was diagnosed with ADHD when she was 3. She'll be 7 in April. She wasn't put on any medication or had anything done with school. She was just evaluated and diagnosed and that was the end of it.
She was supposed to be re-tested last month (the school thinks she has ADD instead of ADHD), but her mom keeps avoiding the questions when bear asks how her testing went or asks for a copy of the evaluation.
I kinda figured that with the mid-year catch up, but I don't see it happening. I think she's too far behind at this point. The only class she gets above a D in, is spelling. Every other class she's been bringing home all Ds and Fs. She did the same thing in kindergarten. Bear wanted her held back then so she didn't get even farther behind, but he was overruled. She passed kindergarten as "below average and needs improvement".
I'll let bear know what you said though. That'll at least give him something to start with. So far, all he knows is that his daughter barely passed kindergarten, she's failing 1st, but is being advanced to 2nd grade with 1st grade level work, and if this doesn't work with the 1st grade work in 2nd, they'll hold her back in 2nd and she'll need private tutoring after school.
I wouldn't doubt that she did. Bear warned her that if she does bad in school, he will take her for custody. She tries to hide progress reports and report cards from him all the time.

They wont push retention if the parent fights it.....this could be the case?
Sorry to butt in here. Maybe Bear could get in touch with the principle and let him know the situation. If he does decide to go for custody, it can't hurt to show that he's been proactive and involved in her education.
