I'm taking my 9 yo son on his first cruise and am getting a balcony cabin. I've never had a balcony cabin on a cruise before. The cost pp ranges from 799 to 1099 depending on the deck. with the 799 being a guarantee where you don't pick the deck. Balconies are on decks 2 and 5-11. The higher the deck the more it costs. Is it worth the extra money to be on a higher deck? I'm already splurging to get the balcony so if I can save a little by getting the guarantee I'd rather do that if its not a big difference.
I always take the cheapest balcony, and I've never been disappointed. Usually Lowe decks will feel less side to side motion at night, while upper decks are closer to the action.
That said, what ship has balconies on deck 2? That is really close to the waterline. The ships I've been on usually have a promenade deck around deck 5, and you can sometimes get spray from the waves that high. I wouldn't want a balcony on deck 2. Most of my balconies have been decks 8-10.

Yea I thought the deck 2 balcony was weird too and that's why I'm hesitant to take the guarantee. For 899 I can get us on deck 5
Yeah, I think I'd go with $899 to not risk deck 2.
When is the cruise? On a lot of cruise lines, after the final payment date, prices go down, they won't drop your price, but if you call they often will give you an upgrade. So you could hope for that to get even higher.

Thanks I'll definitely do that! It's the second week of March. I'm probably going to book it this weekend because I'm afraid it will sell out and we don't have flexibility on the dates because it's spring break.

Same. I think you're actually more likely to end up with a better balcony/room if you go for the cheaper option. Twice we've ended up with handicap accessible rooms that had extra large balconies. Another time we had an actually had a large deck on the back of the ship, vs. a balcony.
Deck 2 is the cove balconies. I don't think I would be happy with that one
What is a cove balcony?
Google it to get a pic of it. It's a partially enclosed balcony. I never choose it bc it's so low on the boat. I prefer to be on decks 6 or 7. Perfect location, close to everything

Oh yea I wouldn't like that. I'm going to pay the extra money to get up higher.
I saw these on a ship that was in port with us recently, and I think I just assumed it was some kind of outside promenade deck, but those holes on the level below the lifeboats are the cove balconies:
And here's what they look like from the inside:
Much closer to the water than even the public promenade deck!
According to the above reviewer, in extremely inclement weather (very unlikely), the crew will actually seal the cove balcony doors. No one seems to report this happening, and in that kind of seas no one would want to be on deck anyway, but that's kind of crazy!
Personally, I think this cove balcony could be cool just being so much closer to the water than you usually are, but you definitely wouldn't have the same kind of views, and the room looks a bit darker and more ship-like (could be a good thing or a bad thing) than than when you have the big glass balcony doors.

This is correct deck 2 is cove balconies and if you (a) want to sun tan (b) mind getting ocean spray on you (c) mind a partially obstructed view...this is NOT the deck for you
