So - I just learned on Instagram that our marathon today was misdirected by SOMEONE. It sent us two roads out further than we were supposed to go and everyone measured long. My garmin and my best friend's garmin read 26.67 & 26.68.
This person screenshot their Nike map compared to the race map and it clearly shows we went out roads further than the course was supposed to run.
People are fired up on Instagram - folks who wanted to break a PR probably were a lot closer than they thought. we are all okay because it was for fun - but others are TICKED

That's crazy! Do you know if it was a different route from last year? I don't understand how that happens. Thank goodness you were just running it for fun.
I actually heard that Charleston was a very easy course to do that on. In this case, someone obviously directed it wrong, but I know someone who ran it last year & commented that at times, she was basically on the course alone & wondered if she was always going the correct way.
I mean, it's rare that a marathon is less than 26.3-something. A race with a ton of turns like Kiawah will be more than that and big races like Chicago, NYC, etc will be much longer, but that much over for a small race is crazy. People who came in within a minute of their BQs and PRs must be livid!
And it was at mile 2, so it affected everyone who ran today
Interesting. I saw the map on IG. I just looked at my Garmin info from last year - we turned down Rutledge last year too instead of Ashley. But my half was 13.21, so something must have been changed with the route.
Did the map on their website have you guys turning on Ashley? Because the map on there now definitely shows Rutledge....I'm just curious if they changed it when the drama started.

Shenanigans!
Haha! That's what I thought, but I looked again, and they definitely have two maps on their site. One has Rutledge and one shows Ashely. WTF, Charleston? Get it together!
ETA: One is the 2014 map & one is 2015. No wonder volunteers/people were confused. Someone on their FB is saying that the lead car took the incorrect turn. Yeah. Maybe someone gave them the wrong map!

Not that I will ever come close to a BQ but if I were...I would probably murder someone if this happened to me. True story.

Grrr, that would make me so angry. Even in a marathon, seconds count when you have time goals.
On a side note, the last 2 marathons I've run (since entering the Garmin age), both clocked in at exactly 26.66 miles. I must be more terrible at running tangents and weaving than I realized.
That happened to me in Rehoboth a couple years back. They corrected it at some point for racers after us, but it was an extra out and back that I knew was wrong after we did it. My race fell apart after that anyway b/c of tummy issues , but It got in my head. I think I ended up around 26.7 or so, which isn't too far off from my large races (MCM and Boston I run 26.6 ish), but I expect it and account for it in large races. Not, oh look, I gained an extra .3 this mile.
MCM I was a bit long too - but there were 30k runners. This had 4000 runners - we weren't weaving around people at all. We will see if we hear from the race director
If everyone ran the wrong course hopefully they can adjust the times. With Rehoboth they couldn't b/c the lead racers following the bike went the right way and then at some point they realized and started directing the right way. It didn't make a difference for me b/c I had recently aged up and had an extra 5 min for my BQ. There were others that just missed though. Other than this did you enjoy the course? I'm thinking about doing the half sometime.
They just posted in FB that they are remeausuring and making adjustments. Hopefully they are able to make this right.
Sweet! I am not on Facebook so I will my best friend keep me updated.
cinco - the half course is flat - there is only one "hill" at a bridge near mile 10. not much scenery after mile 4 or so - if you are coming to charleston to see good views. Apparently they want to keep more of the race in downtown but the city denied the request. They said they will keep asking every year....so it could get better! Prob not much difference in course than myrtle beach.

Thanks! I think I'll make the trip to Charleston, but skip doing a race More boozin' and sightseeing time that way.
The lead vehicle led the marathon and half marathon down the wrong street between mile one and two, causing the races to be slightly long. We sincerely apologize for this and we are working on a plan to adjust all times for the total distance you ran to the true marathon and half marathon distances. This will require an added distance which we will take ASAP and advise once completed. Our apologies again for this happening and we sincerely hope you were able to enjoy an otherwise beautiful and festive day. As you know, the after marathon bike rides are taking place as we type so once those are complete an official email will go out to all participants.

So are they adjusting them all to 13.1 & 26.2? Because if so, that was a glorious mistake. LOL People are going to come out much better in the end.

Out of curiosity , why are big marathons longer? Is it because there's lots of weaving around other runners?

Yeah, typically with more people there is more weaving and the congestion also makes it difficult to run the tangents. On top of that, the courses tend to be larger (wider), so you're covering more ground running from one side of the course to the other, TRYING to run tangents, when you don't really know what turn is coming up next. That is the reason I stayed smack dab in the middle of the course when I ran Chicago. (The course is SO wide.) At the end, I had less mileage than the rest of the people in my group.
