Our first four choices aren't available for our dates (which aren't flexible). Would like to keep it under $350usd/night. Location is the most important, as the whole point is to sightsee and we love to walk and explore. We are open to B&Bs or regular hotels, as long as the B&B isn't too dated and has a/c and en suite. Thanks!
Before moving here, we stayed here a handful of times. Not sure exactly when you're going, but this is right at the top end of your budget. The rooms are standard size for Europe (AKA small), but the location is the best for being a tourist. The London eye is directly in front of the hotel, Elizabeth tower/Big Ben and Westminster Abbey is across the bridge, super close to the tube and a lot of the touristy sites are close.
Also, as a side note, I highly recommend attending the ceremony of the keys ceremony for closing the Tower of London. It lasts like 20-25 minutes and it's really a unique experience. You can book tickets online now and the tickets are free, but it's a £1 service charge:
We stayed at the Hilton Tower Bridge. While it is south of the river, it was a convenient location. Walk to Tate Modern, Tower Bridge, Burrough Market, the Globe theater. We even walked to the Tower of London. Tube stop is up a few blocks and lots of buses go by too. The room sizes are more on par with American hotels.
We stayed at The Cranley in Kensington a few years ago. It was the lowest of the low season, but I don't think it's too expensive normally, and the location is fantastic. It was also one of the bigger hotel rooms we've had in Europe.
Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime. Mark Twain
We stayed at the Double Tree in Westminster and we liked it. Definitely the nicest room we've ever had overseas. It's on a really slow & quiet road, but so close to the south bank, Big Ben, Westminster Abby, Houses of Parliament, Buckingham Palace, etc. The only thing it wasn't close to, was a lot of the pubs we winded up liking, but we always ended our night with a drink on one of the boat bars on the Thames and we enjoyed that.
ETA: When we go back, we'll probably look around Kensington, but no complaints.
Try Cheval Residences. Big one-two bedroom apartments close to Tube stations and supermarkets. we stayed at the one near glouster park station. We stayed there for 8 days with our 4yr old and loved it.
If you want to save some money just avoid hotels in the city centre. Look at the underground map and book hotels from Zone 2 and above. Avoid Zone 1 as it's very expansive. You can easily reach anything with the underground tube.
Ah, and avoid hotels with cockroaches, there are a few i know!!!

There are a ton of hotels near the Gloucester Road tube station and its super convenient to most of the touristy stuff. You can walk to the Natural History museum and the V&A. Its on the Piccadilly line that runs to LHR. I stayed at the Villa Kensington in November. Nothing fancy but its convenient, has all of the basic amenities, free Wi-Fi and breakfast is included which helps keep food costs down. There are a few grocery stores near the hotel and a ton of restaurants.
Check out Lincoln House Hotel near Marble Arch. It is no frills and European-sized, but I've seen many of their rooms and had three groups of family members stay there and had pretty good experiences. The prices are really competitive and the area is fantastic--you're very close to Hyde Park, Marylebone High Street (great food and shops), Regent's Park, Marble Arch, Oxford Street, etc. www.lincolnhousehotel.co.uk/

We stayed at the Park Plaza Riverbank London twice and it's in a great spot. I found them on priceline for about $200. The rooms are American sized, too. Close to Vauxhall, across the river from Westminster, and down the road from the Eye. They have 6 hotels, all in great areas. www.parkplaza.com/london

We stayed around the corner from here a few weeks ago in the Avni Kensington. Rooms were super tiny but it was cheap. I really loved the location, though!! We had friends at the Millennium Gloucester and that was a really nice place.
