DH and I are going to take a 3 day weekend in March and celebrate our 5 year anniversary in Charleston. I know we still have some time, but I also know that some places can book 30+ days out (plus I like to talk about food), so help me decide where we should go for our anniversary dinner. Price isn't a concern.
Right now, my top two choices (just from reading reviews) are Husk and FIG. I heard great thing about McCrady's, but DH isn't big on tasting menus. If you were choosing from those two, which would you choose? If we did one for dinner, would the other make a great lunch option? Do we need to say screw it and do dinner at both while we're there? LOL
We are also open to other suggestions, I just kept reading great reviews about those two restaurants/those chefs. I would also love to hear any breakfast, lunch, dessert, or drink suggestions. I've been told that Hominy Grill would be a good brunch choice. Give me your must-dos! TIA.
You can't go wrong with either, but I would probably choose Husk. We liked brunch at Magnolia (and dinner actually), also enjoyed SNOB. Charleston has amazing food.

I'd go with Husk. Other spots I like:
- The Macintosh, one of my current favorites for dinner, great drinks here too - Poogan's Porch, good for brunch - Brown Dog Deli, fast/casual lunch (think sandwiches/salads). If it's nice out it's great to get it to go and walk down to the waterfront park to eat. - The Blind Tiger, dive bar w/ good happy hour appetizer & drink specials - The Gin Joint, good for unusual cocktails
Thanks for all of the recs! There are way too many choices to choose from. Luckily we are only a 4 hr drive, so we can go back for what we miss. I went ahead & made a reservation at Husk for 3/20 (our anniversary), because there were already limited spots. If we research more & change our mind, I can cancel, but it sounds like a great choice. It looks like FIG won't take reservations until 4 wks out, so I'll check with them as it gets closer.
We have another dinner, lunches, and brunch we can do, so I'll look into all of your suggestions. We rented the cutest little apartment on Broad St. I'm so excited.
I've lived in Charleston all my life and the foodie scene is out of control (in a good way!). You'll love being on Broad Street, you'll want to walk to Blind Tiger and have a drink in the courtyard if its not too cold.
For a casual breakfast, you will be close to Queen Street Grocery "not your average corner store". It is very neighbor-hoody and has great crepes, 99% sure you'll be able to walk there from where you are staying. Brunch is super popular; so many options. High Cotton is upscale Southern. The gospel brunch at Hall's is amazing but $$$$. AC's is a dive bar with awesome chicken and waffles, but I do mean DIVE. Toast is really good breakfast anyday.
Do ya'll like seafood? The Ordinary is the same chefs as FIG and has a fantastic raw bar. Coast is a more laid back and fun seafood place. Neither are open for lunch, but Amen Street is and while not up to the other two has some good stuff. Pearlz Oyster bar is fun for happy hour.
The same chef as Husk and McCrady's just opened Minero for tacos that I think does lunch. The Griffon pub is also good (traditional pub fare). Further out, another good place is Leon's with the best chicken sandwiches. If you venture out to Sullivan's Island, Obstinate Daughter is my new favorite restauarant that way; also highly recommend Poe's to visitors.
There are really so many and they are so fun to talk about! I'd love to hear where you end up going!
Hi there! Just butting in to say al320 and I ate at Husk (brunch) and Poogan's Porch (dinner) during the Kiawah weekend. Both were fabulous - great food (I think we scraped the bowl on the cheese grits we split at Husk), nice interiors and fun cocktails! The neighborhood was so unbelievably charming too. Don't think you will regret your choice.
Also, i realized after i got back that the original baked is in charleston (i thought it was charlotte, oops). Ive been to the ny stores. Go get yummy baked goods!
And yes, moreace01 had great meals! I loved charleston!
jwright, thank you for all of the suggestions! You definitely mentioned some places that I had not yet come across. Since you're a local, out of curiosity, if you were picking from any restaurant in the city, where would you chose to go for your anniversary dinner? Based on the reviews here, I'm keeping our reservation at Husk for now (but they have some really mixed reviews...more so than other places.) It definitely doesn't have to be an overly quiet or romantic place. We just like a place with good food and maybe some fun craft cocktails. I'll definitely let you know where we wind up.
moreace01 and al320, I was actually planning on asking you and the other Kiawah girls where you wound up when you were in Charleston. lb2006 just ate at Poogan's Porch and raved about it. Glad to hear you guys had great experiences there and at Husk. It really seems like we can't go wrong at any of these places. I think I'm just going to narrow it down and (while I know the menus are seasonal & changing), ask DH which appeals to him the most.
al320, there seems to be a big difference in season prices, because the place you guys stayed is $500+ per night. LOL No. We rented a really cute 1 bdrm by Broad and Church St for half that.

I love Husk; have been for brunch three times; lunch a few times, and dinner just once. Husk gets a lot of backlash because it got SO MUCH press; it was oversaturated. Honestly, I see reviews on Tripadvisor from old people that think it is gimmicky; or that they use lard in everything. They use locally sourced everything so the menu is set day-off and they use awesome salted butter that probably does have lard in it, but it is so good! If nothing else, the burger is phenomenal.
My long standing favorite for a good dinner out is Cypress. It has been my fav for years; I always get the wasabi tuna. I haven't been in about a year because we've been using dining out money to try new places. If Cypress is my all time favorite, my new-comer favorite is Macintosh. There is an upstairs bar at Cypress with awesome cocktails and Cocktail Club next door to Macintosh is very fun and has an outside rooftop patio. I will say that neither of those is quintessential Charleston - High Cotton, Magnolia's, Hank's, SNOB, Poogan's Porch, 82 Queen are all the stalwarts, but most of those seem a little tired to me. I'm not one to sit in a courtyard and sip shecrab soup. I'd rather have a little livelier crowd, cocktails, and more unusual food.
