My mom put one in my hometown newspaper. It's like, 10 pages of town gossip, and there are little blurbs throughout devoted to shit like "Mr. And Mrs. Smith visited with their daughter, Minnie Smith, in XYZ town on Sunday. They had dinner at the Golden Corral. A good time was had by all."
There's also a section entirely devoted to this old bat who reports who she sees around town. It's called "Out and About" or something like that. It's a list of people and where she spotted them.
"Mr. Doe was spotted buying groceries after work on Friday."
"Bonnie Doe was seen dropping by the post office in the most beautiful sundress."
"Bob Smith decided to walk his dog to the bank on Saturday morning. It was a seasonably warm morning and perfect for a walk."
I know my mom put my wedding announcement in there to be an AW.

I'm so shocked by people who have never seen a newspaper wedding announcement. I used to love looking at those when I was a kid. Like 8-10 years old? I think they came in the Sunday paper.
I have the newspaper announcement from my great-grandmother's wedding somewhere. I think it was at her parents' house and her youngest sister was her bridesmaid, and it had the description of what they wore and the luncheon served afterward. Since this was about 1928, it's pretty neat.
Wow, having the one from your great-grandmother's wedding is amazing!

It's a copy of it, not the actual paper, but yeah, the text is really interesting!

That's still really cool! My aunt kept laminated copies of my grandparents obituaries for me, which I look at from time to time. I was 1 when they both passed, so it's one of the few connections I have to them. I love having any sort of connection to the past like that!

no
eta - my sister's wedding was in the local paper .. or at least her engagement was. she married a rather successful chiropractor and I'm sure it was his idea. my sister is NOT the AW type. the wording killed me 'bride-elect' and 'groom-elect' eh its the Midwest for you !

That is super cool! We have the newpaper announcement from my grandmother's bridal shower in 1951. Who puts an announcement in for a bridal shower? "The bride received several place settings of her chosen china pattern..."

That's really awesome
I went to a small all-girls' high school, and the Dean of Students would clip the engagement/wedding announcements of alumnae and post it on the bulletin board outside of her office. My two bridesmaids and I all went to that school (my sister, plus a friend that I'd met at that school) so I thought about submitting it to the paper just so our school could have it, but I never got around to it.
Hahaha, NOPE! I didn't know normal people really do this. (you know, people who aren't a Romney or Charlotte from SITC).
We never subscribed to our local, town paper where I grew up. Plus, when I got married, my entire family had moved out. My friend did this since her parents still lived there, but I privately side eyed her for it. Who really cares?
If you are thinking of doing it in the Boston Globe, that's crazy. Do you have to pay for it? I definitely would not and I totally think it is an AW/pretty princess thing to do. (Sorry).
Not in my local paper, but we did announce it and have a write up in our religious bulletin.
DH is from a town of +\- 3000 people. Not only was our engagement & wedding a big deal, but they did a story on my bridal shower!! They listed who was there, where they were from, what was served and some gifts. It was quite awkward!

I was doing family research and found articles about my mom in the local town paper from the 60s and 70s. There were so many things that read like this. I told my mom it read like facebook! Seriously, THIS is what people did before facebook (and still do I guess!)
Not NY times caliber I'm afraid. Perhaps we could have been in Mr. insoms Podunk Texas town's paper though. Lol
Haha, awesome. You have us beat. Name: 0 University: 17 Parents: 0 Tropes:0 Identifiers: 1 (unfair since it hasn't been written... but I tried to think about what I'd actually include) Avocation: 2 Locale: 0 (I feel cheated here!)
We will not be announcing our wedding in local papers. we might submit something to our undergrad publication since we met there and over half the wedding party are alumni.
Lol at all the comments about money. I am pretty sure it is very cheap in most towns - maybe not in big cities I guess.
I highly doubt mine cost more than $25, which my mom paid for (because it was her thing) and it was run a few months after the wedding. In the grand scheme of wedding costs, I'm pretty sure $25 was ok.

What is lol? Do you think people are lying? It was at least a few hundred when my mom looked into it and this was in a medium sized town.

A college classmate of mine had their wedding in the NYT. That guy was insufferable. I'm surprised that the point system doesn't give extra points for boarding school attendance.
Yes, we had both an engagement and a wedding announcement in our local paper. My parents paid for the engagement announcement (about $100) with the rest of the wedding expenses. But the day we got married, they cut me off completely, lol. So we paid for the wedding one and it was about $350. I remember being pissed they wouldn't pay for it, haha. We were poor back then, and that was a lot of money!
Pretty much everyone I know had both in the paper. Medium-sized town in Texas.
