I am in week 12 of Pfitz 18/55 training plan. I have made all of my miles so far. I have 2 run remaining for this week. I am supposed to do 17 miles tomorrow and then a 15K race on Sunday. Well there is 100% chance of rain tomorrow (when I am supposed to do my 17 miles). I really don't want to do my 17 miles on Saturday because I want to race my 15K, but I am not sure I can do 17 miles on the mill either. Thoughts? WWYD? Thanks ladies!
Could you add it to the race? So a couple miles warm up, race, more miles cool down? If you want to race on Sunday, I think this is your best option if time allows. A 17 miler the day before a race isn't ideal. If you don't think it would affect you, then I say run it Saturday in the rain. Unless it's cold rain..

This is what I would do, I'd try to just add onto the 9 you've already got planned.
I wouldn't add 17 miles to the 9 I was racing...that's a marathon, 9 miles of which is going to be pretty fast.
I'd suck it up and run in the rain. Or do half on the treadmill and go outside for the rest if you don't want to be out in the rain that long.
I don't think that's what they meant. I think they are suggesting making Sunday a 17 mile day.
Unless you take the 17 really slow, I don't know that 17 on Friday is the best plan for racing a 15k on Sunday, either. Is it 100% rain all day?
An additional 8 miles on top of the 15k doesn't sound like a blast, but it's doable. If you don't do 17 tomorrow, I'd do 9 on the treadmill and add 8 on to Sunday. I've added 6 on to a half I PRd and it wasn't too terrible.

Just ditto on what others have already said. I'd do a mile warm-up, run the race, then add the 7 miles afterward to make that your 17 mile day. Do the 9 you had planned on the treadmill Friday.
If you want to race your 15K, I would just do a smaller run like 6 miles or so on Saturday on the mill or in the rain.
I don't think racing a 15K is so far below doing 17 miles.
I did Pfitz for my plan and had the Army 10-miler one weekend. I did an easy 10K the day before and then raced the hell out of my 10 miler. It was a huge confidence boost and really helped my training.
Or you could add it before. But I wanted to kick ass in my race without worrying about mileage before or after so I just set aside my long run for that week and kept at it every other week. You still have 6 weeks of training ahead you should be fine.

yes, that's what I meant
I'd probably do a mile warm up and then add-on after. Actually, if it was me, personally, I'd probably be inclined to just shorten the "required" run for that week. I do that often when I race a half in the middle of marathon training.

Ha! Reading comprehension not super this morning.
Either way, I'd stick to the training plan for the long run on Friday. Mostly because the thought of keeping going after a race just suuuuuucks. I did it last summer with a half and it was SO hard to skip the festivities post-race.

Tbh, there's a strong chance that I would do this. LOL I just know that some people are super numbers obsessed.
I once did 5 super slow miles before a half (because doing it after sounded like hell), and it was one of the best races I've had. I took 2.5 minutes off from a PR that I had just set two weeks before. Maybe my body just does really well when it's extra warmed up.

The 17 isn't really a major run for you at this point in training. You've done a few 18+ already IIRC. I'd do a couple miles warm up add a mile cool down and call it a week. I think you will get more out of full out racing a 15k-1/2 distance than doing a 17 miler. Good luck!

This is true. Actually this is what I would do
I'm not a big rule follower, so I would too, but crazy ass Pfitz actually calls for both this week. 8k-15k race on Saturday, followed by a 17 miler on Sunday. In this case though, I think order matters. Like you guys are saying, 17 miles isn't huge at this point, but I would imagine that 17 miles after racing 8k-15k is all about the benefit of running on tired legs.
With that said, when I did 12/55, I didn't do a single race that he listed. Lol

Yeah, I know. Last week I did my 20 miler on Fri fast and then did an easy 12 on Sat instead of Sunday. So I have done back to back runs with my long run. There is 95% chance of rain and 42 degrees outside tomorrow so I plan to run 13 on the mill and the do a w/u and c/d around the race on Sunday. Not ideal, but this is the first time I've had to do this in this training cycle. Damn weather!
