We drive 45 min to Costco for just the two of us. We used to live closer but now that we've moved we just can't quit that place. We hit it up every 2 or 3 months for staples.

As to Costco being 45 minutes away -- is it in an area that has other stores or places you might need to go? I live 30 minutes from BJ's (and it used to be 45 minutes before we moved a couple of years ago) but I still find it to be worth it to have a membership because I'm in the area at least a couple of times a month for something and I can combine errands into one trip. If it were 45 minutes away in the middle of nowhere, that would be less useful.
Pom...If you want to try it, sign up for the executive membership. You get 2% cash back and if you don't meet the threshold for paying for itself, they'll refund you the $55 that makes up the difference (regular is $55/yr and executive is $110). We go weekly and do 90% of our grocery shopping there. They have the best prices on tires. We've bought a bunch of electronics there. Bedding. Some kids clothes). All in addition to food. Even if it were 45 minutes away, I'd still go at least every other week. I think the quality of most of their food is WAY better than what I can get at the grocery stores here. And if yours sells beer/wine/liquor, the prices on those are really good too.
I'm a single with two cats. I tried it for a year and it wasn't worth it for me. The cats did not approve of their litter or cat food. I order in bulk from Amazon for paper and household items. I'll be checking out boxed!
ETA - Mine is about 45 minutes away, which left me going on the weekends. Weekends at Costco make me crazy.

We live just outside of San Antonio on the southwest side. There are 3 Costco stores and all are on the north side. Mr. P has a corporate office between two of them, but he very rarely goes there. That said, they just built a Trader Joe's between the Costco stores plus Mellow Mushroom and our favorite sushi place are nearby that area, LOL. I need to stay away from that part of town
Don't slap me, but my other pause is that we rarely pay for gas, tires, etc... Mr. P has a company vehicle which includes a fuel card and expenses. I drive my car only when we have company or he is away on business.
Still, the cheese purchases alone might be worth it.

I had a Costco membership as a single person and it was worth it...so, 2 people now and we're there multiple days of the week, buuttttt we live/work right by one.
With it being so far away? I'd probably invest in a second freezer/fridge so you could really stock up and not have to go as often. Their non perishable things are awesome-furniture, TV's, etc. Also, things like dogfood, etc. Their return policy is also amazing. Gas is great, but wouldn't be worth it if you lived that far away.
One BIG perk of their Executive membership people don't realize is their insurance. It's through Ameriprise and I haven't found a better deal in terms of value -GREAT coverage and affordable. My rates keep going down because I've been with them for YEARS now. We just bought a house and are using them for Homeowners insurance...$34/month for BETTER coverage than a local Allstate agent that was around $50. Insurance alone pays for my membership and then some.
