Was is more than what would normally come out? Since you lose some hairs every day it would make sense for a bigger ball when you wash/detangle less frequently.
I have fine wavy hair but it tangles like a mother effer. I use a wide toothed comb when it's wet and then switch to a different brush to style after all the tangles are out.
Even then, if I have the wrong shampoo/conditioner I end up with clumps in the comb.
When you had an easier time with it before, did you use the same products you use now?
If your hair is pretty tightly coiled, that clump may not be made up of breakage. Daily shed hair gets caught in the curls and basically stays there until you detangle. It looks really bad in the brush but it may not be true breakage.
But still, I think I lose the amount of hair of a small child each week when I detangle.
I've succumbed to the fact that there's nothing I can do about it. I've been much happier ever since lol. I use herbal essence (blue bottle) to detangle and giovanni leave in conditioner.
The only way I don't lose hair is if I retwist my hair every night so that by the end of the week it's not an afro, but I actually like the versatility to go from a twist out to an afro during the week, so I'm just gonna keep on keepin on!
no no, this is normal. I always lose palmfuls and my hair is thicker than thick. it's just normal shedding. I feel you on the WHY DOES THIS SHOWER TAKE SOOO LOOOONGGG??
and the denman brush will change your life. if you feel like it's still snagging or not gliding easily enough, slide the bristle part out, flip it over, and remove every other row of bristles. that made it my dream brush. and a crapton of crappy suave condish to detangle.
it's a lot of work, but worth it. your hair is GORGEOUS.
The Denman brush is truly amazing. I realized my hair was a different texture when I started using it. Quicker to detangle and it turns my kinks in to tiny springs. Absolutely best product I've bought for my hair.
I thought the same until I detangled and retwisted everyday for a week. For me it was natural shed. I do have to be careful with it because it does seem a softer since I quit the creamy crack (lol I have never heard that before, but it is so accurate).

A lack of protein in one's hair could also result in breakage. Granted, if I go days without a wash I lose so much hair I could form a wig for future use.
There is a great website I follow and they offer a hair analysis. You send in pieces of your hair from the front, middle, sides, back and underneath. Instead of trying to figure out your hair's properties on your own, they do it for you. I did it a few years ago and got a large report back telling me all about my hair. It also comes with a list of recommendations based on the results. They include drug store brands and salon brands to fit every budget.
I am currently using the Deva one conditioner and while I liked it at first it is almost too rich for my hair and my curls are limp and not well defined. Plus, every time I find a new product, it is discontinued eventually.
This is not helpful at all, but this is what I felt like when reading this post and the responses.
I have coarse, thickish, naturally curly/wavy hair that I have to wash every other day and it takes 1.5 hours to wash, deep condition, dry, and flat iron. Not the same, but it's a pain in the ass. I lose gobs of hair every week and I wish I had wash and go hair. I've found that the more often I wash (which is hell on my hair) the less hair I lose but then it looks and feels like straw. I feel like I am destined to be bald one day.
