So... my new job approved a bigger salary for me and it's a huge increase! Pretty much they're giving me the promotion I would have gotten on my one year anniversary now. I was not expecting this at all!
If it wasn't for all the MM posts about negotiating salaries, I would have never done it. So thank you MM!!
Also, I found out that it was my direct supervisor who worked very hard to get this for me. Should I send him a thank you? How should I word it?
I wouldn't make it an e-mail, I'd make it an actual note thanking him for working to help get you the salary increase. And emphasizing that you will be the stellar employee he clearly thinks you are.

I'd like to thank him in person, but that's 2 weeks away. A handwritten note would be nice, but kind of awkward to hand him a note when we first meet? I don't want to call because he's always busy. He's missed appointments to call me a couple times because his meetings get held over. Email seems impersonal but that's how most of our communication has gone so far.
So I guess I need to decide: impersonal email or wait to tell him in person in 2 weeks?
I will still be working with commodities but not trading it on the markets anymore, yay! My favorite part is that I will be doing something meaningful and hopefully making a difference in the world. And I travel overseas a few times a year...::poof::
Thanks everyone! I decided to just send an email now. I wanted to let him know how grateful I am now rather then let him think I'm unappreciative for the next 2 weeks. But in the future, I will write a thank you note.

It may depend on the culture of your office. Real notes are very rare at my company as our teams are largely virtual
I do a real note on occasion. Mostly on occasions where I am trying to appear more warm/emotional. Not necessarily to convey a greater level of gratitude.
