Eh, I think it's over the top but there is some truth to it. My grandmother has Alzheimer's and doesn't always know who I am but we can still have a nice conversation about some topics. My elderly fil, I can't even have a conversation with because whatever the topic he manages to bring it back around to how Obama is ruining the country. H has mentioned before how he feels in some ways that he has "lost" the father he grew up with.

I didn't lose my father to FauxNews... he's always been an avid watcher, and I was as well many years ago. It still baffles me that I was one of them. :shudder:
Jesus, this is my FIL. Ever since he retired he's become obsessed with Fox news. It's all he ever posts about on FB and all he talks about IRL. I used to love him but now I dislike him so much, I avoid him.

No, there's no truth in it. You haven't lost your grandmother to Alzheimer's yet. She may not remember who you are, but if she's communicating with you at all, you haven't lost her. I can ignore my dad or use selective hearing when he goes on a stupid rant based on things he heard/read. I couldn't ignore my grandma ripping toilet seats off of toilets and throwing them at the nursing home nurses because she was paranoid/terrified/confused/angry. I couldn't ignore her just laying in a bed or sitting in a wheelchair staring blankly and occasionally mumbling a word or two for the last year or two of her life. It didn't just FEEL like we lost her, we DID lose everything about her except the shell of her physical body for the last years. I'll take my dad's mind numbing rants and stupid comments a million times a day before I'd ever wish to lose him or anyone I love to cancer or Alzheimer's.
So after SIX YEARS without fruition of the oft-predicted Obama-led Muslim, communist attack - why isn't there a reckoning?? I heard it ALL at the last presidential election. So, what happens when 8 yeas/2 terms pass and our economy is stronger, debt is down and oil prices are low??
You know, to all the people snd the ranting that never came true? Wow! We're not actually under sharia law, after all.

My stepdad is very conservative. We do not see eye to eye on many political issues. He pisses me off whenever we do try to discuss politics.
But I love the shit out of that man and having almost lost him to cancer 15 years ago and having lost his mom to Alzheimer's, I am also offended by the idea that his conservatism is worse than losing a loved one.
I do, however, agree with the sentiment on Fox News. It's shitastic, nauseating journalism and it's sad how many people buy into it.
Yeah, my dad has fallen into the black hole of Fox News. He has it on most evenings when I visit, and I have to take a double dose of BP meds to keep my blood pressure under control while visiting with him. I've stopped trying to argue with him about it, he just does not listen.
I cannot talk politics with my parents and it is mainly because their only sources of news are Fox and the crappy local paper that doesn't cover national events. My dad has actually yelled at me because I don't believe the crap they spew on Fox.

Oh, my parents-in-law. It's so sad -- they take everything as complete fact. Also 1 BIL.
Jake's other brothers are all pretty conservative and they take in multiple sources, are well educated about the issues, and avoid political conversations in public (and with their parents even).
ETA in case it isn't clear we are the only liberals on his side, lol, well us and 1 SIL.
I wish we could go back to ethical journalism. There is nowhere to get a clear picture of what's going on in the world today. (Sigh)
BBC actually has a good view of American politics. I think they miss some stuff (the deep racial implications, sometimes, for instance) but I like their overviews of our politics.
Other than that I think compiling NPR (which was independently studied and found to be politically neutral) with other sources (NYTimes, Washington Post, etc) helps get you a better picture. But you're right, the onus is entirely on you as the media consumer and not on the responsibility of the reporters.

24-hour news coverage was a terrible thing to happen to journalism.
Yeah I don't watch news anymore.
Unless it's a video making fun of Fox News (< I'm an ass).
