I have a 21-month-old daughter and she will not stop picking at these two pimples on her face. It's been almost two months. Of course, they aren't pimples anymore. Ugh. At first I used regular band aids to cover the pimple-turned-open-wound, but her face reacted badly towards the adhesive. So now I'm cutting up gauze squares and using a sensitive medical tape. And I still can't use too much or that irritates her skin or even tears off some skin. Anyways, long story short, I catch her pulling off the gauze and tape and scratching at the open sores. Especially at night in her crib. Any thoughts? I have no idea what I can do to keep her hands away. Plus, this prolonged use of the tape is really beating up her skin.
The nurse line at her ped's office was not helpful.

I don't think the sores are itchy, she just likes to pick at them. Out of boredom? She's also fascinated with the idea if having cuts, scrapes, bruises, what have you. I've tried ignoring the act, but she'll keep doing it.
Look into tegaderm for an easy adhesive. It's like a second skin. The waterproof nexcare band aids are flat and gentle. We use both of these to keep DS2's oxygen on his face and he's never had a reaction.

The Nexcares cause a reaction. Boo. We tired those. But I will definitely check out your other suggestion. Thanks!
I just went up there with a six-inch plush doll someone gave us when my daughter was born. I used permanent pink pen to draw spots in either side of her mouth where her sores are. And I told her to keep the doll from picking at them. I don't know how much she understood. It seemed to concern her? I probably scarred (ha) her emotionally in some way. Great.

I know you said you called the nurse line, but have you had her checked out at all? Kids don't really get pimples at this age, so the bump itself could have been a reaction to something, and it could easily get infected. If it's not healed in a day or two I would def. take her in and see what the dr. has to say.

Yes!! I wasn't clear, sorry. I took her in two weeks ago to see the ped and she wasn't concerned it was something else. But I had called the nurse line last week regarding the band aid situ. They were obvious whiteheads in the beginning. Right under her pacifier. Sorry I was unclear. Now it's just a wound she keeps re opening.
Poor thing! I would possibly take her in again as she might need some antibiotic ointment at this point. My DS needed ointment when he was sick and got some lesions around his mouth from excessive drool. I swear those lesions healed right up fast when we started the ointment despite the continued drool situation.
I can't think of anything else you can do to get her to stop picking though. I'm wondering if they itch and of cortisone or something like that would help.

Does she still use the paci? Could that be irritating them and making her notice them more?
