How about things like restaurant guides or guides to parks in that area or whatever she might be interested in doing? Historical landmarks, mural tours, guide to museums...there's probably a guide for something she likes that could help her get to know the city and get her out a little.

I'd ask around for local-to-her people on ML or somewhere else to make some restaurant recommendations and then do maybe a little welcome-to-California gift pack with a couple of gift cards to the movie theatre, restaurants, ikea, Home Depot, the grocery store, whatever you think she'd like.
Every time I've moved, even though we've hired a moving company for full-service, there's been at least a few days when I've been like "OMG, there's no WAY I'm cooking" and/or "We have GOT to get out of the house."
I'm also in LA, but Rancho Cucamonga is a great deal east of here.
I second the earthquake kit. That's actually a really great idea. We don't even have one and we've been living here for 10 years. I would love someone to gift that to me!

I've got family in RC and I've been there a bunch. I think of it as LA in the same way San Jose is part of San Francisco. Near enough that its part of the metro area, but far enough to not really be part of the same city. KWIM?
