I just ordered the lumber for my wainscoting project. $1500 and it's coming Thursday. re: cost, I have a new understanding why people are always making crap from free pallets.
You've got this. And you have all of us backing you up if you run into trouble
I already hit a small snag. This lumber yard doesn't carry 1x5s. My stiles are 1x4s but I wanted a few 1x5s for overlap in the corners. I don't have the equipment to miter the long stiles. Should I just let the corner stiles be a little uneven and use 1x4s?
Wow!! Can you point me to more info about your project? We need this done and I can't decide between DIY and hiring.
I'm following the TOH tutorial - going taller though (42" or so). It might be worth it to get a quote b/c it's not cheap I've got an electrician locating a few outlets a few inches b/c of the spacing of the stiles. There are some great youtube videos too. Lots of different approaches w/materials and styles.
If you don't want to do true wainscoting (e.g., w/plywood or beadboard underneath) you can just fasten panel molding or 1x4s to the wall. That would be cheaper and easier.
I'm stoked about it though - nothing like moldings to add character to a boring room.
Will they cut down 1x6's for you? Or could you do it yourself?
I'm going to take @juno 's advice and rip a 1x4 down to a 1x3. Hopefully Home Depot can do it for me - it's 4 cuts. I think the big Home Depot has a table saw and doesn't charge much for cuts. I like the idea of slightly narrower corner stiles. Now I need to recalculate some spacing b/c of the inch difference, ugh.
