Who else had a phone that recorded this? Anyway, kid is an a-hole and his parents should be required to take his phone away for a month in addition to being kicked out of class for awhile.

Uh...this kid needs more than his phone taken away and sitting out of a few classes.
Yeah, I was just thinking that this kid will probably get kicked out of school for awhile, but I bet his parents don't take his phone away. I have little faith in parents.

A while? No, that might be an 180 suspension. Assault of a teacher is a Zero Tolerance offense in my district.

We have an alternative school for high schools with one assault offense (other student or teacher) - so they are suspended for awhile and then have to go to the alternative school after the suspension is up. A lot drop out rather than go to the alt school. But that kid looked younger than high school (or I'm old). I just assumed he was a middle school kid. I have no idea what they'd do with a middle school kid assault charge.
Yeah I was also bugged by the kids 'let's just leisurely move out of the way for the teacher getting beat.' As if there is nothing wrong with that picture. Also I'm feeling really cynical because I wouldn't be surprised if the teacher gets blamed for this somehow and its not the students fault.

Wow. That kid should be expelled. I can't believe the none of the other students called for another teacher. If this is all over a cellphone, what wouldn't a student like thus do over something more serious?
I thought I heard someone ask "should I get security?" and someone else say "yeah, get security" toward the end so I'm assuming they didn't know what they should do and were rather in shock, or at least some of them which do not include the one getting up from his desk and meandering toward the back with a bit of a smile on his face.
Because I hope to hell that this is not a normal occurrence in their school.

I looked it up with the info from this you tube and the district said another student was calling for security, but they were surprised at the lack of reaction from the other students. Oh and he was a 9th grader.

A high school student in Paterson, New Jersey was charged with assault Friday on suspicion of "body slamming" his physics teacher who took away his cell phone.
Another student recorded the alleged assault, which happened last Monday at John F. Kennedy High School.
In the video, the 16-year-old suspect goes ballistic when his teacher confiscates his phone. The student appears to wrap his arms around the teacher and knocks him into an empty desk. The student then wrestles with the teacher before slamming him to the floor.
As the teacher lies on the ground, the teen can be seen taking something him as someone else yells "Security!" WPIX reports.
Neither the teacher nor the student have been identified.
The student was arrested Friday at his home and charged with third-degree aggravated assault, Fox8.com reports.
The student has also been suspended, the Associated Press reports.
School principal David Cozart said told NorthJersey.com that students are allowed to use cellphones in class for academic purposes, but can be taken away until the end of the day if the phones are used for other reasons.
As shocking was the video was to Peter Tirri, president of the Paterson Education Association, he said the lack of a reaction in the classroom was even more so.
“I’m disappointed I didn’t see any other kids in the classroom help [the teacher] out,” Tirri told NorthJersey.com. “Maybe they were afraid. I don’t know.”
Lee McNulty, a former teacher at the school is surprised at how the teacher didn't make any efforts to protect himself.
“That just shows how much teachers are afraid of losing their job,” he said, according to WPIX TV.

One reason my dad stopped teaching students is because the school system he taught for in the late '90's was so afraid of litigious parents that they were hesitant to do anything to the students. He sent a (repeat offender) student to the principal's office and the student threw a desk towards him. School wouldn't do anything about it.
DH's uncle was a principal. A student purposefully hit him with his car while walking through the parking lot. He majorly messed up his back. That's when he quit.

It's what another couple articles said (9th grade and 16 years old) and it was a high school. I think most 9th graders are 14/15, but if you're held back even one year, you're going to be 16, right? I still think he looks 14, b/c I am not around teens much these days.
I just had a conversation with a highschooler yesterday about his cellphone. He had spent two days in ISS for refusing to give the teacher his phone. He let me know "ain't nobody seeing my phone. Not even my mama". He had his phone in his hand while telling me this so evidently he's right. Thankfully he didn't assault a teacher over his phone but I think his attitude is pretty prevalent. There is something about cell phones that make teens go beserk.

So you called the parents and asked them to suspend his service, right?! Or at least told them what they said, right?! God that would infuriate me that a kid would choose ISS over turning their phone off during the day.

Lol, I wish. I'm a safe place so if it's not harmful, I don't rat on them. Sometimes I want to shake them and call them stupid for the stuff that they do but they won't let us do that.
Ahh, I don't think I've seen that model around here. Being in middle school in 9th grade and having 7th and 8th grade peers would have sucked.
Tangent:
I worked this perfectly. In 9th grade I went to a school that was 7-9th. Over the summer we moved and I did 10th grade in a school that was 9-12th. I never had to be at the bottom of the hierarchy!

I had a student tell me I wasn't taking his phone this year. I told him he's right I am not but he is not staying in my room and disrespecting me. I am not fighting you about your cell phone. I wrote him up and he got a detention. It is hard to like them after they were assholes when they were breaking a simple rule. I also had my admin return a cell phone to a student when she went to him and told him she was having an awful day and taking her phone just made it worse. Get the f#$@ out of here.
Some of the schools in Paterson are just terrible. Between no money and that state taking them over many years ago, they suffered and suffered and are not recovering.
When I was going to grad school at William Patterson, our professor told us that some of the kindergarten classrooms had no picture books because there just wasn't enough money for children's books and supplies for the classrooms. My students that year did a book drive where they donated their gently used books to a school in Paterson. But that was one school that got those books. What about the others?
And I don't think this is a matter of red shirting, I think this is a matter of underprivileged and just not enough money or services for these kids.
This same professor told me that many of those children (in the school I previously mentioned) had never even seen a book until they get to school.
I have a friend who has taught in Paterson since we got out of college. He did that in his technology class, he has two teacher assistants and 20 computers. There are at least 30 students in each class. They hired the teacher assistants to help with the language barrier. Well, the tas speak Spanish, but a majority of the population speaks Arabic, so that is a huge fail.
