The Remains of the Day
It is an example of beautiful storytelling. On the outset, I have no interest whatsoever in a butler or post-war Britain or societal constraints of the lower class, but, dang, if Ishiguro doesn't just go right in to the heart of the man and the matter and make me feel all of the feels for this story. He takes subtlety in his narrative and somehow, beyond understanding, makes it smack you right in the face. So much so that you have to reread passages that you feel are shocking revelations, but yet, seem to be conveyed in a literary whisper. Loved it.
Today, I'm going to go with Goodnight Gorilla because I read it about 400 times a week and its short without a lot of words.
DD got this for her birthday, and she BUSTS UP LAUGHING (as in, so loud the neighbors next door to us can probably hear her) on the part where it's just the wife's big eyes in the dark.
I was an English Lit. major so this is nearly impossible for me. My all-time favorite book is The Picture of Dorian Gray. But I've read many books that have been more impactful. I have so many favorites, all for different reasons.
A very short list? A Prayer for Owen Meany, Atonement, A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius, The Master and Margarita, and A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. I would not be able to pick from among those five, though.
But I have probably read The Watchers by Dean Koontz the most times lol
I LOOOOVE this book. Did you ever notice in old versions, when he first meets him, he gives Einny a Hershey bar but in later editions he gives him a Plantars peanut bar? There is another change that is escaping my mind right now as well.
