One of my all-time favorite books is The Grapes of Wrath.
I'm not saying nobody else can like like/love Steinbeck. I'm just saying I can only read so many novels about the plight of Depression-Era dirt farmers before I have to move on to with my life and books that actually appeal to me.
I feel this way about Les Misèrables. The over descriptive language irritated me to no end! I like the overall story, but get bored when he goes on and on. This is the reason I know I'll never like most Neal Stephenson novels. My husband loves his books, but he can go on a tangent like no one else.
I think I could have enjoyed Wuthering Heights more if I hadnt needed to stop and figure out which character was which all the time. Too many repeated names.
Unbroken - LZ is an inspiration but I wasn't oh my gahhhh over the book like a lot of people seemed to be.
I HATED this book. I thought the pilot friend was an interesting character, but otherwise, I thought it was awful. I don't get all the love for it. Just seemed like each bit was trying to out-suffer porn the last and it was tiring and not at all uplifting. Also seemed like a lot of chest thumping nationalism and excuses for one-sided atrocities while condemning the other side. Just, fuck everyone in that book including the author. Except the unassuming pilot.
I'm making a list of all those who hate Jane Eyre.
Jerks.
I read Jane Eyre in 7th grade and have loved it ever since. I do appreciate it differently than I did when I first read it, but it is still one of my favorite books.
