Oh my gosh, that's so frustrating! I just talked to my district and DH (who helps run the plan at his work) about our insurance for leave and they have to back date it to the 1st if you qualify for a change of life event, which that seems like it would be. I hope you get easy answers tomorrow!
This sounds like what they are doing. I'll just have to wait and confirm it tomorrow.

artgal84 and carawestt I've had to pay for my own long term sub twice (public and private school). They deducted the sub's pay from my paycheck each month.

That is so crazy to me! Did you have to use sick time as well? I've never heard of this.

The sub was covered by my employer for the sick leave. (All 10 days of it, lol.)
I guess it's comparable to unpaid leave at any job? Except with teaching, instead of it being unpaid they still "pay" you but deduct the sub's pay? I've only worked for one public district and one private school so I'm not sure what the policy is elsewhere.

Oh I see, after my sick days are used up then I just don't get paid at all but they hold my job for up to 2 years. This makes more sense now.

Yes, I pay for my sub. It's weird. I have to use all of my sick days up, and I get full pay for that. Then once my sick days are up I have to pay for my sub. They take my daily rate and deduct the sun pay from it and pay me the left over. It's 125 less a day.
They will only do that for 6 or 8 weeks after birth, and then it is completely unpaid.
It's better than nothing. But I also pay for a short term disability plan that helps make up for the difference.
I think it's pretty standard in the teaching profession.

My old district in Colorado did that. You kept the differential between your daily rate salary and the sub pay. Now I just have unpaid leave after my sick time is up unless you purchased optional short term disability at open enrollment 10m before delivery
