I love getting gift cards. Lily got one to a local paint your own pottery place for her last birthday and that was so fun. I'd get one like that, or to a bookstore or even restaurant like a frozen yogurt place as a treat.

I would probably do a gift card, experience, or a book. I don't consider books toys, though, and you can never have too many books (says the person whose house is practically exploding at the seams with books).
I think gift cards are a fantastic idea in this case. It is definitely something everybody can use and appreciate. I know with A's birthday being in April, she does not need any more toys. I tell everybody she can use clothes. She ends up with a lot of Spring/Summer clothes that way!
I'm going to be the dissenter. If she said, "no gifts," she meant it. I hate when people bring gifts after I've said, "No gifts, please," and if we go to a party and listen, bringing no gifts, we end up looking chintzy because we're one of the few who actually respected the parents' wishes.
Take a card, write a nice note and be done with it.

I totally agree with this- especially for a close friend. I know that feeling of showing up empty handed, but it's gone by the time you walk past the gift table. Plus, I think it's polite to abide by the invitation directions. If the invite said- "please, no extra guests," you wouldn't bring someone not included on the invite, would you? I always try and remind myself of this in this situation and it makes me feel more at ease about showing up empty handed!
What I really wish were ok to do- is in my RSVP say "no gift bag pls." I feel like my house is overwhelmed with Oriental Trading inventory!
I feel weird coming empty handed so I usually bring a book. I know that's still a gift, but at least it isn't huge? I'm weird and don't really like gift cards since I stress about losing them.
yes, books! you can never have enough books for the kiddos.
