If you are worried about altering the future in a negative way couldn't you just time travel back to the future and read some history books to see what changed? If the outcome was terrible you could go back in time and not do what you did the first time!

Well, every choice you make creates alternate realities with every possible result. It would be impossible to check them all. Imagine I wanted to stop the plague. Imagine for the sake of argument that two things can happen. An asteroid will come hit the earth at some point and either the dinosaurs die or we die. What if I create a reality where a meteor crashes into earth and destroys human kind? I cannot control that.
