I think part of being a working parent is finding alternative care. There is inevitably going to be a situation where a child is too ill for school and a parent can't take a sick day.
So are you volunteering to take someone's sick kid just because you stay at home and someone else can't? My parents refuse to watch sick kids and I doubt I can find a nanny willing to come at the drop of a hat 3 times a year.

I sent my kid to daycare this morning on the tail end of a pink eye infection.
He started the eye drops yesterday and this morning he woke up with just a tiny bit of drainage in both eyes. I truly don't think he is contagious, but I still feel guilty about it.
Okay here you say drainage and in another post two eye boogers, backtracking? Shocking

?? Isn't this the same thing? The boogers are just crusty drainage right?
Seriously? I'm not a fan of sick kids in public but B has had snot (clear and otherwise) since September. The kid seems to hate the cold and unfortunately we live in MN. I can't keep my kids in with every cough, sniffle and the such. Maybe I'm misunderstanding.
Both of mine have been sick since Joey started school in September too. Clear snot? Fine. We go out, we go to school. Normal cough? Fine. If the snot turns turns yellow or green or any other color or the cough starts to sound phelgmy or barky, they stay home. It's been a shitty winter and we're going stir crazy. But I don't want to expose other people to stuff if I can avoid it.
I don't keep them home with every thing. But the minute something starts to look like it might be something other than a mild cold, they get quarantined until I know what it is and it's not contagious anymore.
Really? Must be nice to quarentine yourselves everytime there's a child who might be a little ill. Not real life. Do you stay home from work everytime you start to feel a little under the weather?

I don't think you can compare an adult feeling under the weather to a kid...I mean, my kids will lick their hands and then shove them in a friends mouth. As an adult, I can use hand sanitizer, cover my nose/mouth when I sneeze or cough and refrain from shaking hands with passerby.
I also don't think you can compare school and preschool. School attendance is basically mandatory by law.
Also my 8 year old doesn't share her cookie and snot with other kids like a 3 or 4 year old.
Yeah I assume when Joey is older I'll be able to trust him not to like, lick his friends when he's sick. Until then it's quarantine for suspect symptoms.
Glad to know my kid isn't the only one to do this. Playing puppy is great fun
Well that cold got my kid sick and then ended up getting me sick. yeah, I'm not 100% sure where she got it (either dance or preschool), but if your kid is contagious they need to stay at home. She also had a slight fever for a day and was sick for 1 week - I didn't let her go to school and reinfect everyone. I also properly wash her hands when we are out in public, but it's hard to protect kids from all the germs.

Yea it sucks. We are quarantined all winter because people go out sick all the time and think it's NBD. DS2 will would be hospitalized and more than likely in the PICU if he gets sick. I have to find childcare to go to the grocery and I give everyone the 3rd degree if we are thinking about socializing in our own home. We got lax during the summer, he got a cold and had to get back on oxygen and still can't get off.

I don't know. Colds last 10-14 days. You are contagious before you have symptoms. What is one really supposed to do? For me, if I felt I had to keep my kid home for a week, I don't think it would be the average cold.

The doctor did give her antibiotics and I had to take them too. We were cooped up the last 2 weeks and couldn't enjoy the warm weather here that never happens. Now it's back to winter.

Um you don't take antibiotics for colds. Either you have no idea what your child had, or something is wrong with your ped.

I'm only on page 2, so I apologize if we're not talking about it anymore, but KC, shut the fuck up.
If my kid is sick, my H or I stay home. (not for colds. if we stayed hoe every time someone had a cold I'd still be a SAHM in the winter in MN)
If one of us can't, they go to DC and our provider keeps them separated as much as possible. I don't know of anyone who would take my kids at the drop of a hat, sick (actually, louie probably would), my ILs live 4 hours away, I'm an only child, my mom works and my dad is dead. So no, I don't have another option.
I mean, we're not talking "mommy has a job, so she can't ever stay home" we're talking, H is in trial and mommy is giving standardized tests or being observed by her boss. bean had to work because she did "the right thing" last time.

So then what do people like me do? I am not allowed to send my kid to school sick. I think this is ridiculous. No public school is like your daycare provider nor is any state licensed daycare in home or center I have ever heard of. A back up plan is a necessity not something that's nice to have FFS. You really think a daycare provider that takes sick kids is more realistic than a back up provider?

What do you mean "people like me"?
Mostly, I had a shit day and wanted to tell someone to shut the fuck up since I couldn't say it to some students today.
I don't send my kids sick, or haven't had to yet, but I can absolutely imagine an extreme situation when I'd have to or risk my job. My daycare is a licensed in-home, but she has two levels and two providers. And I'm not talking about highly contagious chicken pox, or anything, just the tail-end of something mild.

I mean people that don't have a daycare that takes sick kids, and husband who travels and has to give tests too? Our public school would send home a kid with pink eye and discharge. Back up care is a necessity and all theses people screaming how it's not is ridiculous.
I can see where there may be a bit of gray area - like perhaps how it was for bean today. But there are plenty of times where the child absolutely cannot go to school - vomiting, fever, flu, etc. Then there is no choice but to find someone to watch the child. No matter how big your day is at work or how far you are from family. I'm not saying it's easy, but it's not really an option.
I'm arguing for the mom whose kid is like 98% better with no other options as in this case.
Now if she sent a kid to school with a 103 fever and was shitting himself Id be team CJ here.
This is different.
Exactly. You have to weigh the situation and make the best choice you can. Possibly losing your job over pink eye? Nope.
Then you leave a 6 year old at home alone? I mean since sometimes missing work isn't a possibility and school won't let them in and back up care isn't a necessity.
I think we're all focusing on two different extremes here.
Tail end of a cold vs Typhoid Fever. Not the same.
But that's my point people saying there are times they would have to send their child no matter what are unrealistic. What would they do if their kid was vomiting? Send them anyway?

Rora-why are you cussing out KC? pretty sure I was the one who started it here.
just because you don't have a back up plan, it's not reason enough to send a sick kid to daycare.
yes, I get beans case is not cut and dry and some don't see it as a big deal. I do. but if you have a truly sick kid, you don't have an option to send them anyway.
AG is right. it's illegal for schools and daycares and they will get heavily fined and possibly closed temporarily.
you can cuss me out all you want but bottom line. beans knowingly risked infecting her kids class to pink eye. whether it's 4 hrs or 4 min fron thw start of the drops. it's doesn't matter. he still had discharge. if her kid was clear of all discharge. that's different IMO.
