The wait time depends on each practice individually.
Do you know any REs? If not just mentioning it to your OB so they can give you their recommendation might be a good idea. Or if not maybe ask a friend whom you trust, if you know anyone who is/has gone through this.
I have never see a RE so I don't have any experience with this.

I didn't have to wait long for an appointment, I think a couple of weeks? This is really dependent on your practice though. As for a GYN referral, I checked with both my insurance and the practice that I made an appointment with. Neither required it, so I didn't bother getting a referral.
I would just come in as prepared as possible...any charts you have, take them. Any tests you've already had run, get the results to bring with you. Basically, the more information you come prepared with regarding your cycles and tests, the easier time you'll have. Also, I'd recommend writing down any questions you have, because I tend to blank if asked on the spot.

i just made my first appointment earlier this week, it's the 16th of Feb, so not too long of a wait! i'll be taking all my charts with me, i have my annual GYN exam next week so i plan on asking them if there's anything else i should take.
and i need to call the RE and find out whether we're supposed to abstain beforehand...my appointment is like 2 days into FW, lol

In my experience, I haven't had to wait long to get in to either RE, but that will be very practice-dependent.
If you don't need a referral, I would just ask for a recommendation and do your own research. My Gyn recommended the RE who works in her building, but they didn't have great stats (and don't report them to SART) and my acupuncturist, without coming right out and saying "don't go there," implied that they were not the best. I chose my first RE after researching all of the options in the area, comparing their stats, and reading reviews. I chose my second (in another county, so not someone I had considered before) based on a recommendation of a friend (who works with them in an auxiliary way).
You can also see if anyone offers info sessions; our first RE practice did that, and it was a nice low-pressure way to come in and get information.

I'm so glad you're calling! I think this is all different due to your practice and insurance. I needed a referral, but once I had it, they set up testing immediately and scheduled an appointment that was about 3 weeks after I finished it. It would have been earlier if I hadn't had issues come up in testing, as they would have had me start with an NP. Yay, me.
