I buy a LOT of shadow singles, but if I had to choose a palette, I'd probably go with Chocolate Bar just because the colors suit me to a T.
That said, right now I am loving my two neutral palettes - Basics and Becca Ombre - with some Sigma eye shadow in Catch just above my crease to give the neutrals some added warmth and a bit of pop.
I think my favorite is the Naked 3. It's so versatile and pretty. I also really love the original chocolate bar and Lorac pro 2 (really nice matte colors).

I like neutrals and nothing too white/pale (too many pale eyeshadow pots is a common problem with palettes for me because I never use them). The most appealing palettes to me right now are:
Smashbox PhotoOp trio, and Shiseido Luminizing Satin trio (3 is just about right for variety and perfect for travel)
Estee Lauder Pure Color Envy
Kat Von D Monarch
Bobbie Brown Warm Glow palette
UD Naked2 Basics
You can also build your own with some brands (UD) and find excellent ones at drugstores.

I use the paler colors as a base color. I don't need a base color since I use primer and a blending shade, but it makes me feel better to actually use the shadow rather than leave it untouched. I am cheap.

I do that too.
But it's still not worth it to me to pay for them if I can find a better range of colors. I'm cheap too!
I pick up so many palettes, and I know instantly that only about half the colors will ever be used... so not a good value! I just will no longer buy them. Expensive lesson learned!
I'm with treedimensional, I tend to steer clear of palettes that are too big or have too many light colors. I love the Smashbox Trios for their variety but simplicity.
I considered the Naked 2 Basics but I have similar colors already. I would be one I buy though if I run out of the ones I own.
