My SIL's SIL doesn't vaccinate, and I haven't pressed the issue because Ethan is vaccinated, but once this baby is born, I will be emphatically bowing out of any combined family gatherings. Nope, I will not take my vulnerable infant around your unvaccinated child. Sorry not sorry if that hurts your feelings.
Though it does create a hard spot for our joint nephew's birthdays. I don't want to hurt them, but nope.
We need to launch a similar Internet/mommy blogger campaign in reverse.
If Jenny McCarthy's ( or whoever else is a well known vocal anti-vaccer) kid ended up dying or having sever complications from a preventable disease, maybe it would be a wake up call.
But I am not confident that it would be because science and reason and stats haven't seemed to be effective.
***I do not wish anyone's child harm. Vaccinated or not.
Some jackass "doctor" & anti-vaxer on CNN just said that he COULD live with himself if another child died as a result of catching a preventable disease from his unvaccinated kid, because it's not his responsibility to protect every child.
Is it the cardiologist from Arizona? An article he wrote has been all over FB.
The whole "it's a money making scheme!!111!!1" puzzles me the most. Isn't...EVERYTHING a money making scheme? Someone is making money on every single thing I buy, medical or otherwise. Why is that a
Ah, yes. because by preventing millions of illnesses, the medical industry is raking it in. How stupid can these people be? It'd be much more profitable to let people GET SICK.
Well, don'cha know, vaccines weaken our immune system and make us lifelong customers to big pharma, what with giving us asthma, autism, autoimmune diseases, allergies, etc etc. GAWD, Sue, don't you read the inserts?!?!!!11!!?!
Also, in regard to vaccine injuries, I just can't with their "reasoning." If 3 weeks after their vaccines a child passes away from SIDS (or whatever), that does not mean the vaccine caused the child to die. If a child is stillborn 10 days after their mother received the flu or pertussis vaccine, that does not mean that the vaccines are to blame. Ugh.

Yes, this. Anti-vaxxers fail to recognize the difference between correlation(coincidence) and causation. My SIL refuses to vaccinate her child because their Grandpa took a turn for the worse a few weeks after getting the flu shot. He had cancer; the flue shot didn't kill him. I can't even begin to understand the stupidity and flawed logic.

I was just told that there are solid facts to support both sides. I said, nope, there are no scientifically sound sources to support the anti-vax movement.
I didn't realize that Michigan has the third highest rate of vaccination waivers. My SDs live there and we planned to buy a house there in the next few years. I read an article that whooping cough has been raging since October and whole schools have closed for a week due to absences.
I have one FB "friend" who is a Waldorf schooling, essential oil using, mommy blogging anti-vaxxer, and she posted today about "if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all" All the comments were from her other crazy ass friends about personal choices and some bullshit. It took all I had not to drop F-bombs all over her post.

I have the "well, I know so and so..." people in the one I'm in. My response was "While I understand personal experiences might make a person wary of the vaccine, the statistics don't lie. The vaccine rate almost eradicated diseases in this country, and because of people not vaccinating their children, these diseases are coming back. Personal experience can be frightening, but I personally chose to trust scientific evidence and statistical proof over personal anecdotes."
They haven't tried to come back with the claim of "scientific proof" yet.

Yep. my area is right up there with waivers. N's school is at 95% vaccinated, but her assigned HS is only at 79%, with the other major HS at effing 73% vaccinated. It's terrifying, and baffling, because this is such a well educated community. It blows my mind.

Well, I'd like one of these people to explain who is getting rich off of vaccines.

OMG- a friend just sent me a picture of a "friend's" FB post- she is blaming "unvaccinated immigrants (undocumented)" on the measles outbreak. "I think that makes the most sense in this case..... Since it didn't just magically appeal." What an idiot. Truly.

I just wrote Senator Debbie Stabenow. She was just voted the top Democrat on the Senate Health Subcommittee. She can't be on the health committee with whooping cough raging in traverse city FFS! I'm not kidding I'm going to write these people until they do something. I just left virginia where it's much harder to get an exemption and now I'm freaking scared to have my kids in this.

The thing is - even if it is due to immigrants - wouldn't this be all the more reason to vaccinate? Because legal or not, we're not going to stop travelers and tourists in our country. And by not vaccinating are they resigning themselves to never traveling themselves? What losers.
I had someone claiming the same thing about the Disney outbreak, and I'm thinking "Yup, because undocumented immigrants tend to have thousands of dollars to blow on Disney vacations. You betcha".
Totally agree that even IF (and that's a huge, eye-rolling if) that was the cause, you're still better off protecting your own child and building up the herd.

I worked in the enrollment dept at a school district in MI. We always needed a vaccination record for their kid or if they did not vaccinate they had to sign a waiver and state the reason why. A lady came in to enroll her kid in preschool and when I asked if she had the childs vaccination records she said 'no I don't believe in vaccines'. I just stared at her and really hard to not roll my eyes at her.

There are definitely un-vaxers here. I think anyone who has been in this community half of a minute knows better than to say so.
Absolutely. I have a friend on FB who is obviously anti-vax. She never says a word when people are posting pro-vax things. But as soon as there is another anti-vax voice, she will jump in.
I think the states need to pass laws requiring vaccination. The real problem is thst, on some level, the non-vaxxers are right. If everyone else vaxes, and you don't, that is what is safest for your child. Because vaccines carry risks. The risks are lower than the risks of the diseases themselves, but there are risks, so if you can free ride, then rationally, that's the best choice. Of course, when a sizable minority decides to free ride, then it ceases to be a safe choice, but there is a free rider problem.
So the states need to make it mandatory. It may be a constitutional issue, but required vaccines could survive strict scrutiny because there's a compelling public interest. I am not sure the federal government has the power to do it, but in areas it can exercise control (people receiving health care subsidies, anyone insured by the federal government, military children, etc.) it should require it too. This is a classic case where regulation could be justified and should occur.
