I'm now looking for a new RUG for my dining room (you jerks), and I think maybe a dark "natural" color might look good. Or charcoal. And jute looks like it has some good internal, subtle color variance and is allegedly hardy.
I just measured and to be truly big enough to fill the room, NOT block any floor vents, AND not be exactly in the middle of the primary living room-to-kitchen pathway, I need something 9'6" x 10'6".
Didn't you just get a new rug for that? I swear I remember a post of yours about rug dimensions for that room.
Yes. It was a cheap Ikea one and is too small. Which I know, but ML people keep pointing out. JERKS.
Anyway, because I am now undecided about recovering my cheap chairs, I have developed another project for myself that I can do on the internet while the baby sleeps: find a bigger rug.
Hmm, not a standard size-would 9x12 work at all or you really couldn't swing that extra foot and a half?
Nope. It would literally run into the wall.
The room is probably 11 x 11. However, there's a floor vent on the edge of one side, so I lose 1.5' on that side. To keep it looking centered-ish, I though 9.5' x 10.5' would give me enough space so it isn't running right up to the wall.

If you need specific dimensions that are hard to find, consider getting a custom cut piece of carpet, and having it bound. May end up being cheaper than a rug. We did that for our entry rug because we needed 5x7, exactly, and every pre-fab rug was 5'3"x 7'6", or something. So we found carpet we liked, ordered it from ProSource (find a contractor that's a member, they're awesome - like Costco for home finishes), and had it bound for $3/linear foot (was surged, if we wanted binding it was only $1/linear foot). WAY cheaper than the rugs we were finding online, or a "custom rug" from a design studio/furniture store.

Heating vents ruin everything. My living room rug is currently 5* 7 because of TWO off center heating vents.
I've seen several reviews of this rug from West Elm and all mention that it's reasonably soft. Not for a child's bedroom but good for a dining room or adult bedroom. It's a jute/cotton blend.
I've gotta go dig up this pic. Designers typically say add 2' on all sides to table size to accommodate chairs being pulled out.
That would be about 7.5' x 10'
The concern I have with that, is that then the edge of one side of the rug is quite literally in the middle of where you walk to get from the living room/stairs through the dining room into the kitchen. Seems like a tripping nightmare.
I have a jute rug under my dining table and it's almost exactly 9.5 x 10.5. Of course I'm looking online and it's sold out. It's from pottery barn, the Ethan jute rug with fringe and it's really soft. My roomba has attacked the fringe so it's looking a little rough but it's otherwise holding up great.
I think the new size will be good. But do you think there will be a tiny gap between the hutch and the carpet? That might be annoying! especially if you walk in this area all the time.

Yes, and this is the exact problem I keep posting about. Get with the program, Harvard!
ETA: I'm kidding you, of course. That sounded mean.
I don't think the gap will be bad. I mean how often do you walk right next to (inches away from) that hutch? Probably never. And I guess there could be a trip hazard, in the same way that any rug edge that you walk across could be a trip hazard. I don't see the issue I think that size would be perfect.

Sorry!! Don't do it then. The current size is fine. Maybe put in a rug that's a little longer on the sides. And NO jute or sisal. And no indoor-outdoor rugs. I tried them all and they are all rough especially if you have a crawling baby. Do you like ikea? Get a rug from there. They are affordable and easy to maintain. I'm waiting for a rug to come back in stock for my dining room too.

ok, we have that kind of gap between our dining room rug and buffet. It works out ok, and isn't a big deal.
