When could your kid count to 10 unassisted? Last night my friend said her dd counts to 12 without help. Dd just says "one two two two two two". I'm torn on whether a 2 year is just repeating the words or is truly counting (like knows the words mean something).
Dd does have a little speech delay due to her hearing, which could be part of it. But should I be working on this with her?

Both of my kids did at 2.5 and not just reciting but knowing 1:1 correspondence. With that being said it's something they work on in preschool so not the end of the world if they don't get it until then.

I think this is just an all kids are different thing. Repeating the words is the first step. At 2 DD could count to ten but it was probably closer to 2.5 when she started actually counting things and not just reciting the numbers. I didn't really "work" with her. We counted through play, read books with numbers and counted to 5 every time I buckled her into her carseat.
DD has always been ahead at stuff like that but it's been within the past few months that she has really mastered using silverware. All kids work at different paces and master certain skills before others. I really wouldn't worry.

She goes to school full time but her teacher has never said anything about it. I know she is working on colors so maybe they just aren't focusing on it. Thanks everyone, I won't worry about it.

It's not at all surprising that they're focusing on colors over counting at two. She'll get there.
Z used to do that too. She'd go "1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 9."
She counts to 15 now but we have a puzzle we do and it has number on one side and the other side has a pictures you can count. She's obsessed! & we do it a lot haha. Also we had steps too. So we'd count to 13 almost 8 times a day when she was walking steps and such.
All kids learn different. i wouldn't worry! Esp after all the hearing issues.
DS will be 2 in March and doesn't count at all. He does know the different between 1 and 2 things and can pick out a color if I say "get the yellow one" (for ex.). All kids are different, I wouldn't worry!
At two, DS could recite the numbers one to ten in order. But he could not actually count ten objects successfully. There is a big difference between having the order of numbers memorized and having the skill of counting objects.
Also I'm that mom whose mom friends have amazing kids that are always doing stuff way before ds. I have kinda realized my DS just rolls at his own pace and have totally unclenched (since I am a clencher lol).

insert code here DD has always been fast on verbal stuff. She new 1-10 before she was 2, maybe around 20 months. Only now at 2 and a half is she truly counting objects. She can count things to about 5 before she just rattles off numbers.
I honestly don't remember my oldest. my little one, i do remember because he was counting to 20 before 2. BUT it was clearly memorization of the order.
the boys and I played hide n seek all the time and would count to 20. Luke would go with me as a team and we would count together when b hid. this is how he picked it up. I do think it helped him pick up the object counting later in preschool.
the only reason I even remember his age was because I was shocked the first time he counted to 20 without me. I never expected him to do that. I don't think he was some genius child. just victim to being the little brother.
he actually is picking up multiplication facts now at 5. lol. but only because I keep randomly quizzing my oldest and Luke is around. plus when we play a game he wants to play. it's clearly all memorization. he doesn't understand the concept that 5 x 5 is 25 means it's 5 objects being added 5 times to equal 25. but it might help him get it when he is in 3rd grade.
