Why do people not dress up anymore? We went to a baby shower today. DH wore slacks and a button down, I wore a maxi dress. DD wore a smocked dress and DS wore khakis and an Oxford. Not terribly dressed up but we looked nice.
Literally everyone else (except the parents to be) were wearing jeans, to shirts and sneakers. I honestly think it's rude to show up to someone's event looking the same as you would hanging out at home.
I feel like this happens more and more lately. I've even been to wedding where people wore casual clothing and flip flops. Is this regional? Do people in SoCal just not care?
DH literally says this everywhere we go. It drives us crazy. We are in the south so definitely not regional.
That kind of surprises me from the south
I think at showers and weddings people still dress up more but church, restaurants, the theater it's jeans or shorts everywhere!
I've seen plenty of men in restaurants that require coats, wearing nice jeans, a T- shirt and a coat from the loaner coats. Usually these people put effort into dressing and think because their t-shirt cost $100 it is acceptable.
Ugh yes it's a Socal thing for sure! My H hates that!!! We always dress nice (not fancy) to birthday parties etc and still look overdressed. One of our wedding guests wore a hawaiian shirt and jeans eek!!!

Hmmm...I usually dress up to things like that too. It drives me crazy when I see people wearing jeans to weddings and funerals in particular. Throw something nice on for an hour or two. I promise, you'll be okay.
We are in NorCal - I've never seen jeans at a wedding or funeral. I would side-eye and judge hard if I saw that. Baby shower in someone's home? Yes, definitely people wear jeans. Everyone looks put together though. DH is in finance and he wears mostly jeans and dress shirts to work and that's totally the norm. I prefer it because it means less trips to the dry cleaners or getting out the iron. But he takes a sport coat when he travels and definitely packs a suit when traveling for meetings in NYC.

It is happening everywhere but IMO it's pretty bad in SoCal. I love dresses, but I feel like I have nowhere to wear them anymore because if I do, I'm "too dressed up." Kind of a bummer.

Yes, there is definitely a way to make jeans look nice. That was not these people lol
I handnt really noticed this. but my extended families alway dress up for showers, weddings, Christmas every year.
church is funny. I still make my kids wear slacks and a non graphic top. but when we go to the Saturday mass. everyone is super casual. but Sunday most are dressed up. well not super dressed up but business casual.

Really? I wear dresses from May to September, almost exclusively when I'm not nursing (harder access!). Just basic cotton dresses, nothing fancy, but dresses none the less. I guess I don't really care if I look dressed up, but I don't think a cotton sundress is fancy. I guess I wouldn't wear my nicer dresses like that - those would be for church, showers, parties, etc.
I would never wear jeans to a wedding or funeral but I might to a baby shower, if they were nicer jeans with a sweater or fitted top. We don't attend church regularly but if we go with ILs I don't wear jeans.
Our church is casual so we wear dark jeans and nice tops. But never to a funeral or shower. We also dress up nicely for birthday parties, dinners out with in laws, neighbors, etc. I agree people aren't dressing up as much. It seems here jeans and t-shirts are good for every occasion.

In my area, it seems to vary by group but, in general, the more in the city or near the city, the dressier.
My hometown, in the middle of farm land, considers a Carhartt jacket to be business casual and camo is a neutral for some, but there are farmers everywhere. My DH was thrilled to attend a summer wedding and not wear a suit, just a linen shirt. I've seen jeans, shorts, and ball caps at weddings. I think that's awful and I'd have been upset if anyone cared so little at my wedding.
I'd maybe wear jeans to a baby shower at a casual place. I'd base it off the location, time, and crowd.

This exactly. Dresses are so much more comfortable (besides the occasional thigh chaffing) and flattering to me. I wear basic cotton dresses (when I'm not nursing) everywhere -- the grocery store, baseball practice, BBQ's, everywhere.
