Not mad at them. Someone called into car talk asking if there would be any damage to their car if they just chose to NOT dig it out when they get mounds of snow. I don't blame them for asking.

what was the answer? Because the only thing I can think of is that they might have plow damage that they won't see until spring when this shit all actually melts.

Your car will be fine but make sure you start it every couple of weeks or your battery will die. He then suggested buying one of those portable battery charges for $50.00. This woman was calling from Boston if that puts things in perspective about the amount of snowfall and how long your car will be covered.

Dibs is nothing to screw with in Chicago. My favorite I ever saw claiming dibs was a light up Nativity set. Go ahead - TELL THE BABY JESUS TO GTF OUT OF YOUR WAY so you can steal someone else's parking space that they spent an hour clearing!
Dibs in Chicago is a time honored tradition no matter how many times the Dept of Streets and Sanitation tries to do something about it.

Interesting. Yeah, trickle chargers are good for stuff like that. And I have a friend in boston who was posting pictures of her last snowfall. When they were talking about the Chicago storm headed that way today on the radio I was like, "damn. Uhhh....good luck?"
I love how creative people get here. Last year our neighbor down the street put what looked like an old school playpen in between two parking cones. I found that very odd.

Man, I chose the wrong city for my years of living in a city! There was no such thing as dibs in NYC and inevitably I would have to get out and reshovel a space for my car because the only spot I found was cleared by someone in a huge SUV who didn't clear it well enough for a low-riding car. Leaving the kids in the car in the middle of traffic to scrape enough ice off so I could get into the spot suuuucked!

If we move to Chicago like I want, and we have to park on the street, I will dibs the shit out of that. I'll even take pictures for your entertainment.

Yeah have you read the discussions about this on Prince of Petworth? Entertainment.
I'm not sure I have read those. If it snows ever this year, I will.
This whole thing could be avoided if people like my asshole ex-neighbors didn't just drive their SUVs on out without shoveling and then take the damn space that non-SUV owners shoveled. They were seriously the worst.
I'm so anti dibs, and I know that makes me the minority. Anyone driving around also shoveled out a space that is now vacant. And I held firm to this belief living in South Philly with two cars that we had to dig out. It's a public space, you can't claim it.
I'm just hoping to not have to move my car till this melts.
I realize this is probably unreasonable, but I'm going to hold out as long as I can.
I don't do dibs. And it does not go over well on my street - someone usually goes down the block and removes all of the chairs at once. Shoot, half of these people have garages. I don't know what they heck they are doing parking on the street in the first place.

Around here you would get a fine for putting trash in the street.
Chicago is a weird place. Take a spot cordoned off with chairs and beer crates that someone who was NOT YOU shoveled off? You are likely to come out to car locks intentionally frozen.
Not always though! The big deersmacking machines often just run over the snow and then come back later and park in a shoveled out spot because their non-shoveled spot is a big block of ice. THAT SHIT INFURIATES ME. tacosforlife
They are assholes, and that would piss me right off. Buuuuut I still maintain, digging out ONCE does not give you an assigned spot until the winter ends.
I wouldn't care about getting THAT exact spot if the other assholes shoveled.
But seeing as I actually WATCHED MY BITCHCUNT NEIGHBOR driver her goddamned earth killing SUV out of her space without so much as a nod toward snow removal and later watched her pull into the space that my husband had shoveled before leaving, yeah, I get dibs.

Go ahead, yell away
Do you follow the Philly Police Dept on Facebook? They got a new social media person, who posted this when the first forecasted snow was about to fall:

Yes, yes, a thousand times yes. Luckily I live in NYC where this shit doesn't fly. You hold your parking spot by leaving your car there. When it's time to drive somewhere you obviously don't need the spot.
I have complicated views on dibs. In a congested area where there isn't much parking, no dibs. Sorry, but there isn't enough parking to go around. Just because you shoveled out a spot doesn't mean you own this spot for the next couple weeks. In a less congested area where there is plenty of street parking, dibs is just fine. Gavel.
