Hi everyone! On ML, we were discussing bringing a Harry Potter reading group to this board. This is an initial post to get some input on what our "meeting" format should be, how often/what days we should check in here, etc.
I know that as the series goes on, the books get longer, so while Socerer's Stone is a short read, it might be nice to choose check-in points with the longer books. However, I've never been part of a book club before, so I don't know how these things work. I don't want people to be annoyed that we are taking too long, and I don't want people to feel overwhelmed because they can't keep up. I had two ideas: 1) Read the entire book with a determined date to finish it by, and then all talk about it then. 2) Choose ahead of time where in the book to check in and create separate posts for those checkpoints. That way, people can talk about that without worrying about spoilers from later in the book. We could still choose a date to finish the book by so we can keep moving along, and plan for a big group post at the end.
If you have other ideas, let me know!
Most of us are rereaders, but HP virgins are welcome! For the rereaders, we need to make a pact that we won't spoil from the next books (or at least create special and clearly marked posts for those).
Also, I've created a word document with everyone's names who wants to be included/tagged in the bigger threads. This is the group I have so far. If you want to be added to or removed from the list, tag me and let me know.
IMO, I think we could do the first three without a check point and then the last four with check points. But I'm happy either way - doesn't matter to me!

That would be fine with me! The first few books are short enough where it might be silly to only be 100 pages in and be like, SOOOOO what do you guys think. lol.
I like the check point idea. I'm reading them with my son and so we'll move pretty slowly (the chapters are so much longer than other books we've read, so we're averaging less than a chapter a day). That way, people can pop in and post whenever they hit the check point.

Especially the first one where there isn't much that really happens until half way through

This would be okay, too. As long as there isn't a deadline. We tried to do monthly book clubs last year and it didn't get much traction since people weren't always able to finish by the deadline. ETA: I think people felt like they missed the discussion and just gave up. If we have a post for each book (or whatever) then people can just add to the discussion whenever they want.
I think the first two are fine with no checkpoint. I consider Prisoner of Azkaban to be probably the most pivotal book in the series so that's where I'd start check ins . But, really, I'm down for whatever.
everyjuan, I'd like to participate. My goal for this year is to reread the series. I'm going to be postpartum soon, so not sure how much time I will be able to dedicate to reading at first, but if there is no deadline for having each book read by, I'd participate.

Awesome! Sure thing. I added you to my little sheet. The next time I do a mass post, you'll be tagged.
the first 2 definitely do not need checkpoints. they are so short!
i just finished 3 but i think a checkpoint during 3 and then at the end is a good idea for that book. no input on the rest of the books, but i assume since they just get longer we need a couple per book.
perhaps select chapters ahead of time where a check-in will follow?

I like the checkpoints idea. I'm going to be reading them with the girls. I've been trying to convince them to read these damn books for YEARS. But nooooooo, PERCY JACKSON!

And when we all finish the series, we should celebrate by a big trip to WWoHP! Haha.. kidding. Sorta.
If I could afford it, I'd be there. I've wanted to go since it opened, but we were too poor to take SSs. And now they are starting to think they are too old (teenagers)
Now if only my roommates hadn't stolen half of my HP books when we moved 5 years ago. Guess I better go to B&N. These are books I like to hold onto while reading.
