There are two rims - North and South. We stayed in the park on the South Rim. Highly recommend it. There are several options. We stayed in on where the showers were down the hall. You had a sink/toilet in your room. Worked out great. We got up early to see the sun rise and just walked out the door about 50 feet to the rim.
I stayed in Flagstaff over the summer to see it. The city is really charming and fun to hang out with. I feel that around the canyon there isn't a lot going on.

We stayed at the Maswik Lodge last spring and really liked it. It's not luxury accommodations by any means, but it was nice enough and one of the cheaper options in the park. It's back off of the South Rim - about a 5 minute walk to the rim. We liked this because it was cheaper, and it was quieter being back away from the hustle and bustle of all of the crowds. They have a huge food court there, though the food was sub-par, IMO, and expensive, but there are plenty of other options within walking distance.
Unless you want to do 3 hours of driving each day to get to/from the canyon, I wouldn't suggest staying in Flagstaff.
Also, if you mean spring break this year, you may be out of luck for lodging in the park. It fills up fast. Your best bet is probably to call Xanadu (the company who takes care of park reservations) and see what is available. You may have to call back daily until a cancellation comes in. We had to do this when we booked over 6 months out for our trip.
We are staying in the park (South rim) at Yavapai Lodge. Online feedback was not to drive to and from Flagstaff especially at night since the road is very windy and dark with critters.
