We are doing 4 or 5 nights in Kauai as part of our 10th anniversary trip. What part of the island did you stay in? What hotel? We are thinking maybe the Princeville area but not sure. Anyone stayed at the Westin there? What are your favorite "don't miss" activities or restaurants? We need to get our plans made! Thanks!
We've been 3 times and we've always stayed in Poipu. A couple of those were in the winter, and Princeville can be rainier and have rougher water than Poipu. We've stayed at the Sheraton (can't recommend), the Hyatt (great but big), and the Koa Kea, which was fabulous. Activities will depend on what time of year. The hike to Hanakapiai Beach is great, but only if it's dry. Waimea Canyon is also gorgeous, but if you go too late in the day it can get very socked in with clouds.

We've done Princeville in the summer and I love it. But I'm very much into the quieter aspects of all the Hawaiian isles and that's much quieter than the East or South Coast.
The Westin is lovely and has some great amenities and is near Queen's Bath, which is my favorite aspect of Kauai.
I would try to decide what you're interested in doing and plan where you're going to stay from there. We did Princeville before I had my son, and now we tend to stay in Poipu because it's a little more kid-friendly with food, activities, and beaches.
I love Kauai, and the outdoorsy aspects are my favorite - like I mentioned, Queen's Bath, hiking to some of the falls, hiking around Waimea canyon, etc.

We loved the north shore. It was so much prettier and more secluded than the south shore. We’ve been twice and stayed in Princeville both times but in condos so I’m not much help on hotels. It’s beautiful to be up on the cliff overlooking the ocean but the major disadvantage is you have to hike down the side of the cliff to get to the beach. It wasn’t a big deal for us.
We did a ton of hiking there – the full Na Pali coast trail, Awa’awa’pui, Waimea Canyon, Sleeping Giant, Hanalei Okolehao. Our favorite beaches were all on the north shore – Hideaways and Tunnels for snorkeling and Secret Beach for hanging out.
We're going to the princeville westin in a few weeks and I can give input then!
Thanks! I would love to hear about your trip. I am also curious why all the rooms seem to be island view when it looks like the resort does have ocean views.

So far, the resort is really nice. Three are definitely ocean view, but I think a limited number would have GOOD ocean views, if that makes sense, because it's just not an ocean resort, but up on the cliff. Not sure if they don't advertise them as ocean view just to save them for use with the SPG platinum or things like that? We're on a special package and agreed to do a presentation for more points (haha, we'd never but

Argh, damn app. We'd never buy full price. Anyway, we have a nice ocean view, but some of the rooms in 6 & 7 clearly have awesome views as they're at the ocean end of the resort.
Everybody's given nice advice, but Hanalei has been recommended for good restaurants. We're going to try Postcards for a nice dinner out.
We stopped at Costco and safeway on our way here, and we're glad because it's much cheaper than this side of the island.

We've stayed on the North Shore twice, both times at the St. Regis Princeville. The area is absolutely amazing! Definitely quieter and more "natural" than Poipou. I love Hanalei the restaurants have a very local feel and the hiking is pretty amazing.
If it's helpful here are my most recent trip reviews from Kauai
We've stayed in Poipu once and Princeville twice. I STRONGLY prefer the north shore though I imagine we'll do south shore next time with DD with us. I dislike hotels when in Hawaii and opt for a condo or house but YMMV.

Thanks for following up! Glad it is nice and thanks for the info on the ocean view. What building did you end up in to get your ocean view? I also appreciate the tip on stocking up on snacks before we get to the North shore...we will have to do that.

Building. 5, but there are a bunch with views! I think 4 faces the golf course, so ocean beyond it, and then I think it's 6 and 7 at the end with the best views.
