Latest update we have is that he's stable, the bleeds are minimal and in the next day or two they expect to be able to start doing facial reconstructive surgery.
This is all coming second party so I don't know everything and I don't know that anyone was with him when the accident happened, but I am having a really hard time imagining something in which there would be almost no body injuries but he'd have to have facial reconstruction and such severe head injuries.
And this is the kind of guy that would never ever ride without a helmet, even on a beach cruiser.

I've seen other stories of similar injuries where the person landed on their face, and the head/face took the brunt of the impact. It would have to be a really specific fall like a "rotational" fall where he flipped over the handlebars or partially went over the front of the bike and hit chest/head first. I can't see only having severe facial injuries if he slid/fell sideways. I hope that he recovers quickly!

Another update. If this is true, it makes me want to vomit.
"The info we have currently is all hear say so facts may change. They think he was headed west on Gamble rd in Santa Fe after a visit to his nephew on Gamble who was not home. He had spoken to his nephew's neighbor and was headed home. A 19 year old who lives in the area made a left in his car from Pearson on to Gamble striking him. We are uncertain where he was located near the corner. However, Friday the same kid had buzzed his nephew, his wife and child while on bikes with his big truck. When I get more info I will pass it on. I have heard nothing of arrest or citation."

As in any case like this, he's had setbacks but is making forward progress overall.
He's had two facial reconstruction surgeries and a bout of pneumonia but the last update from four days ago said, "Eldon is much better today. Yesterday he has a second surgery that went well. He was up in a chair for about 4 hours. Very responsive he was awake for my 40min. visit. Earlier he was watching track videos with another visitor."
And we've now seen the accident report. The intersection was T-shaped. Eldon was riding correctly, in his lane etc riding from the bottom to the top of the T, so to speak. The driver was driving across the top of the T, from right to left and made a left hand turn to go down the T. Except instead of staying in his lane, turned into Eldon, head on, in his lane. So the driver made a left hand turn and just nailed him because he either accidentally cut the turn short (which on country roads we've all done, you know, you cut that yellow line a little bit) or he did it on purpose and meant to just buzz him and it went way wrong or he meant to hit him head on.
No charges yet, our friend relaying this information seems to think the cops are waiting to make sure Eldon makes it through before filing final charges.
