Welp, my Arizona 200 mile race is officially off the table. And not because I want it to be. I found out via a FB post once I returned to civilization after a long weekend of camping/training...
I'm bummed, but not "omg, so pissed!" about it. I really wanted to run that particular race to support the RDs and to prove to myself that I could go the distance. There are other 200 milers this summer but with entries starting around $1K it's just not feasible. I have no other races on my schedule for the year, but I think I'll keep my miles up and see what pops up.
Any suggestions on stupid long races this summer? My schedules wide open...
Love of my life baby boy born 11/11. One and done not by choice; 3 years of TTC yielded 4 MMC and 2 CPs, through 4 IUIs and 2 IVFs. Focusing on making the world a better place instead...and running.
That stinks but hopefully he will honor his word and give refunds. Are you interested in any 100 mile races? The javalina jundred gets rave reviews here in Phoenix but isn't until October.
I'm sorry girl! I know you've already been working hard towards this. I hope the right option comes up for you.
Minnesota has some awesome distance stuff if you want to head east. A lot are 50K or 50 mile, but Lutsen has a 100 mile in the fall. fall.superiortrailrace.com/race-info/100-mile/ A friend of mine did the spring Superior Trail Race (50K) and loved it. She said organizers do a great job.
Insanity, right?! I don't understand how they can charge that much and still tell us they aren't making much profit, I doubt that. Make profit, that's fine...but at least be upfront about it!

I've heard awesome things about their races, including the Across the Years 6 Day race -- was [am?] secretly hoping they'd pick up a few of the Solemates' races and just run them...but I haven't heard anything on that yet. I'm definitely looking at what they have coming up tho, the RDs are incredible!
That's such a bummer! I'm sorry. Do you at least get a refund?
Hopefully I get a refund. I know the RD personally so I know he'll do his best to stand by his word but on his personal FB account he was saying that all the paid entry fees have already been used on reservations and permits and such so it's not coming out of pocket. Which sucks for him, but still... I know a lot of people have told him not to even write the checks and I know a lot of checks will go uncashed. As much as I'd like to be that person morally, it just doesn't make sense for me financially!

I bet a lot of it goes into permitting if you are running in State Parks, National Forests, etc.

True -- and the aid stations require a lot of equipment to set up.
However, the race that got cancelled was the a very similar set up and only cost me $500...while the other races [there are 3 of them] are all charging $1,000+. It's that inconsistency, combined with truly defensive argument when I asked that has me leery about it. I wholeheartedly agree that RDs do a TON of work and deserve to make more than the average non-corporate RD makes, but just be upfront about it!
That said...the Colorado 200M did get mad enough about my "why does it cost so much" question [which I swear wasn't completely asshole-ish] to offer me a "pay what you want" entry fee, as long as I didn't touch any of their aid station food...this might be a good time to reconsider that offer...
I second the javelina jundred rec - a few of my running friends have done it and had amazing experiences. I know it's only 100, but I think it's really well produced, and relatively close to home for you.

Do it! We'll crew the crap out of that. No need for the aid station food.

I've head so many great things about it...it's hard not to jump at it right now! It's definitely on my 'to run' list!

After this past weekend in Moab I could probably carry enough stuff to only see people every 50-70 miles without dying or hating life too much.
It's kind of a tempting challenge.
Or maybe taking on a 200+ mile stretch of the Colorado trail? We'll see -- so many options!

That stinks. How far are you willing to travel? In Ohio we have quite a few ultras--the Burning River 100 miler goes on near where I live and is $215 on July 25th www.westernreserveracing.com/events/burning-river-100/

That's such a bummer.
For such an endurance-oriented area, we don't have a ton of 100-milers, and they're all sold out/lottery (especially the ones that are WS100 qualifiers). If you want to tackle an adventure versus an organized race, I'll happily crew you, but I have no suggestions otherwise. I hope you find something awesome as a replacement.
