Are you having a plated dinner or buffet style? This changes my answers.
Soup - butternut squash with creme fraiche (If I had to carry my own bowl of soup from a buffet station to my table I would spill it everywhere and be sad.)
Salad - spinich with roasted pine nuts, goat cheese, poppy seed dressing
Main - roasted chicken with a rosemary and sage herb crust
captainmel, you will appreciate this one. At our reception we had baked ziti and I was afraid of getting sauce on my dress, so I tucked the table cloth into the top of my dress! Everyone thought it was funny and I had no issue with people of taking picutres of this.
pinkplasticdoll, I would also say that it would depend on buffet or sit down on what you should be serving.
I would tell the caterer you want to take advantage of in season veggies and you want a chicken dish and a whatever dish and let them come up with a menu. Then you go taste it. Don't give yourself more work than you have to.

This.
And I wouldn't do a soup on a buffet. I would worry that no one would eat it because they'd be afraid to walk from buffet station to table with soup.
I like mel's sage and rosemary-crusted chicken idea. Those herbs would work well with pork loin, too.
I'm a big balsamic fan, and I could see either chicken or pork with a balsamic glaze and herbs. Or maybe honey mustard?
This will be fall, so squash and root veggies all nice and roasted would taste amazing and look pretty.
OH you could have all of these things, and then a pick your own sauces area, because a lot of these things work well with different sauces. You could do a creamy warm gorgonzola, the two glaze/sauce things above, a gravy, bbq if you wanted...that way each person kind of gets their own version of the meal.
This is stream of consciousness typing, so take whatever you want out of it

This. Let them come up with ideas, or tell you what they're good at. You just show up and eat and say "Yes, Yes, no"
THIS. The best part of planning a wedding is the tastings.
I need some inspiration for our fall reception food ideas.
Soups? would a butternut or pumpkin soup be good? Salads? i am thinking of greens, nuts, cheese of some kind and dressings Main dish? chicken? i honestly dont know. I am thinking of possibly having a carving station of some kind. Sides? potatoes of some kind, roasted broccoli, maybe roasted root veggies.
Clearly I have no idea what I am doing so can you give me some inspiration or ideas for a fall reception.
The soup sounds good. I just had a carrot soup that was divine.
Salad: mixed greens (including arugula) It's a great green salad item for fall. dried cranberries and goat cheese Main Dish: roast chicken and another option Vegetable lasagna if you have any vegetarians or a roasted pork loin would be good Sides: roasted brussel sprouts or carrots, mashed cheese potatoes

A friend of mine did a traditional Thanksgiving dinner for their wedding. Everything was delicious! I believe they served it family-style, which could be a nice compromise between buffet and sit-down.
