I'm not really a regular here, I used to be one on ML but have been gone for a while. I got a new job recently and need a briefcase. Can anyone suggest one that's trendy but practical? I am terrible with style. I'm hoping for one that's under $150.
I'd look at structured leather bags instead of a briefcase. A lot of briefcase types will end up looking manly or like laptop bags. I have a Longchamp leather bag that I used to use when I practiced law that fit files or a computer. Anything that can fit a laptop should work well enough for files so I would look for bags in the larger size. I know that Michael Kors has some large enough and other brands that will look good

A lot of what you are going to find are briefcases, but there some really great colors that will fit folders and you can usually find removable laptop sleeves. Here's a leather one in 5 colors under budget. This one is croc embossed if you want something more conservative. This one is under a hundred in wine, but the tech pocket is not removable.
I use a purple leather Cole Haan Village Tech Tote. It has a padded section for a 15" laptop and then various sections for books/folders/files/whatever.
