So, what does one call a sandy embankment with volleyball, lifeguards, sunbathers, and sand castles that leads to lapping blue water which stretches to the horizon and has waves, ships in the distance but it's not an ocean? That's NOT a beach? Oh, ok. I'll go stay at my waterfront cottage that "doesn't count." Lol.
We have a great tent thing called a Shade Shack. I love it and it will be coming with us.
The potty is a good idea. I've hung onto the potty chair for my car just in case.
Ok so you said the cottage is on the beach, like beachfront? I'm totally side eyeing the potty, that seems excessive.
I mentioned the potty because it would be help for us in our situation (when she was 3). We have a pool in our back yard & have taught DD not to pee in the pool! It's kinda hard to tell a 3 year old, it's okay to pee in the water here but not there.

I'll be the slight voice of dissent. Your kid may not enjoy the beach.
Trust me on this. We live by the beach. DH and I are beach people. My parents/brother/his family-all beach people. My daughter isn't.
When we go to the beach house, (we haven't gotten there yet this year); she is perfectly happy being in the new environment. She loves going to the house, to the arcades, being on the deck, etc but will do anything to avoid the beach. Usually DH and I take turns staying at the house with her. If you take her to the beach she gives you a million and one excuses of why she needs to be back at the house. I think the longest she lasted was an hour and it was completely miserable. We have tried everything to get her to enjoy the beach; brought in her friends, got "new" toys, packed her favorite foods. Nope.
We do have a baby pool that she loves to be in on the deck outside.
Our fingers are crossed that this year will be better than the last two years.
I'm a beach minimalist, even with kids, so we bring chairs, towels, hats, sunscreen and buckets. W have spent many a happy few hours on the beach with that gear.
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”

I'm with you on this one. And yes, I'm in Chicago. But it is a beach here. Sand, lifeguards, waves and boats. It's a lake, but still…it's a beach.

When we stay waterfront on a lake I call it a lake house.
I concede that there is a difference between the average lake and one of the great lakes. At the latter it's more beach like. But most lakes are not like that.

Are there parts of the Great Lakes that have real waves? We stay on Lake Ontario and while there are waves they are tiny ones not big ocean waves.
When I think beach I think sand at the water's edge. Doesn't matter whether it's lake/ocean/gulf, etc. Having grown up around the Great Lakes, I've always considered them to be beaches.
We had a pop-up canopy on our beach vacation. It was awesome to have a lot of shade and DD2 and I took naps there. It was a private beach and everyone left the frame of their canopies up at night so it wasn't a big pain. We've taken it for just days at the beach too and it's a little more annoying if you have to haul it in at the end of every day but still worth it to me with a toddler.
Do you mind if I ask where you went? This kind of convenience and respectful community appeals to me

We were in Gulf Shores, AL. We stayed here: www.vrbo.com/446095 and I would recommend it. It was a really nice beach.
Can anyone tell me how the baby powder thing is done? This is probably a dumb question. Do you just sprinkle it on after you're done on the beach? We're doing a cruise and would like to drag as little sand into the cabin as possible.
We're in north TX and have almost no beach experience. A friend did suggest using a net bag for beach things. You can shake it out on your way off the beach and get some of the sand off before you get inside.
