Ok, so I've just been notified that we're invited to a wedding in Turks and Caicos in November or December.
The only airlines fly there (from here at least) are AA and USAirways. They are in the middle of a merger.
My thoughts were to open one of each of their cards for each of us. Then we'd each have 50k miles for each airline. (200k total).
But, since they are merging soon, do you think it would all become one big pot, then giving us each the full 100k miles to use together for either airline?
I am browsing flyertalk.com as well, but they're intimidating!

I got an email recently that AA and USAir frequent flyer accounts will be merged starting in the second quarter of this year. DH has the USAir credit card and hasn't heard anything, but given that the miles go pretty much straight into a FF account, then I would expect that you're correct, and if you opened one of each for both of you, you'd end up with 100k each once they merge the FF accounts.
If you each open both a US Airways card (which is currently a Barclay brand card) and an American Airlines card (which is a Citicard) for a total of four credit cards, you will each end up with 100,000 miles. It's an awesome deal, actually. They will indeed be merged into one big pot, but if you open the cards now you should still qualify for the full 100,000 if you meet the spending requirements.

Thanks! We had just opened SW cards for the 50k miles with them (SW is by far a better airline for most of our needs), but now that we're faced with a trip to Turks and Caicos (the horrors, I know) I wanted to find a way to fly there for free too. So I opened the Barclay one for each of us yesterday, and thankfully you only have to make one purchase, how easy! As soon as we hit the spending limits for the SW cards, I'll open the AA Citi ones and hopefully they'll still have the 50k bonus as well. At least I got the USAirways one before they merge programs in April and that card offer becomes obsolete. I pay daycare on our CC, so it's super easy to meet the limits!
