Confused by the question. How do you not have a frame of some sort unless the mattress is just on the ground? But I'll try to answer. We built the Ana White farmhouse bed for our master, so it has wood rails connecting the head and footboard, large enough to hide the low profile box spring, which I LOVE. Our guestbed has just an ugly metal frame, and the box frame is exposed when the covers are folded back. Ugly. I mostly keep a matching fitted sheet on the box spring, but the metal is still ugly.
My childhood bed that's in our garage has a wood head and footboard and came with wood rails in a full length, which are lovely. But it has slots to allow for queen rails as well. Because the queen rails are longer though, and we didn't buy the queen rails with the set, I had to just buy some ugly metal ones for when I want it to be a queen. Not as pretty.
I was thinking it might not sound right! Sorry for the confusion but I think you explained it right. I was considering either a headboard attached to the metal frame. I would put a bed skirt on to cover the metal frame but I agree with you, not the prettiest. The other option would be more like you explained with wood rails connecting the frame and headboard or as incognitotoday mentioned a sleigh bed. My concern is that buying just the headboard, might look unfinished but getting a headboard with a frame might look/feel too big in the room.

You can get a bed with the head, wood frame and foot board that isn't huge. I think some call them small scale furniture? If size is a concern, I would not get a sleigh bed. We had a metal frame in one of our spare bedrooms. We used a bed skirt like you mentioned. We've since updated it with a platform type bed.
We bought a bed w/ a headboard, footboard, and rails. I like the look ,but I'm forever terrified of stubbing my toe. Until this bed, we've always only had the metal rails. DH made a headboard for it but it didn't make it in our move (sacrificed due to incorrect truck size). Metal rails work fine, IMO, as long as you don't mind using a bed skirt. They make nice tailored ones that aren't fru fru.
I love the look of tufted fabric headboards, and if I had a guest room, I'd do one of those.
Thanks! I love the fabric headboards also but I feel like they can get dirty and how do you clean them? You could get a dark color or have them steam cleaned like they do for a rug I guess.
For our room we have a headboard, wood side rails, and foot board. For the kids we have headboards attached to a metal frame & a bedskirt. I prefer having the the footboard and wood rails, but just the headboard was the more economical decision for 3 kids. Their beds look finished, but it is a different look than our all wood bed. I think it boils down to preference. If you don't want the metal frame/bedskirt, you can find wood beds that aren't huge. Many have a piece along the foot that looks just like the side rails. Something like this... ab.weimgs.com/weimgs/ab/images/wcm/products/201470/1026/img10o.jpg
In the master, we have wood bed frame w/ headboard + footboard.
In the guest room, we have metal bed frame + wood headboard.
I think it definitely looks nicer to have a wood bed frame than the cheapie metal bed frames, but it's one of those modest priority sorts of preferences.
We just got an IKEA Hemnes bed frame/head board/foot board last week. I'll be honest-while I really like the look of it, I do not like the fact that I can't conceal what's under it easily. We utilize the space under the beds in every room for storage and I'm still trying to figure out what to do in our master.

Thanks for your comment. I was considering the hemnes because we have the hemnes bureau, chest and side tables now and didn't think of this. Our plan is to use the hemnes for a year or two in our bedroom then put it in the guest room and get a new set for ourselves.

Ha that's the exact setup we have except we're planning on keeping it for a long time
If I figure something out, I'll be sure to post. I'm thinking that I may just do some fabric covered boxes-something that'll coordinate with the bedding. Either that or get the sofa table (http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/00251809/) to put in front of it. You can only see the stuff under it from the end-our bedroom is at the end of the hall and you can see everything from down the hall. DH doesn't care, but I do! I saw that setup in the store and really liked it. We have a lot of our travel bags/backpacks under the bed, so I'll need to find some larger, shallow boxes to cover if I go that route. Either that or piece together my own!

Upholstered headboard + upholstered frame. It feels substantial....I kind of like it, but I'm not sure. I wish our bed were normal height and not so high
The tall height, frame size and king size make it feel too big for the room

DH keeps his shoes under the bed in low baskets. You can see the baskets, obviously, but they look OK. You can't see the shoes inside.
Oh, and to answer the OP: we have a headboard, footboard, and wooden rails connecting them in the master. The guest room just has a metal frame w/ skirt and no headboard. I put two large prints (low) above the bed instead.

We have a metal frame only in the master at the moment (planning headboard, footboard, and box frame) and a metal frame with headboard in our guest room. The metal frame/headboard combo isn't ideal or at all attractive IMO. I'd much prefer a wooden frame, visually.
What about a metal/iron type of bed? I have one and even at King size, it looks light and airy. I find sleigh beds normally look like big, heavy, solid pieces of furniture.

We have a complete bed frame and I hit my shin on the footboard corner nearly every freaking day. So keep that in mind when looking at different styles.
