I think there is a lot of denial regarding how the vast majority of commercially produced animals are raised and killed.
Yeah, but I think it's unfair to tell a two year old that thier two year old friends don't love chickens since they eat chickens. Remember that it's not up to those two year olds. It's up to their parents. And K may learn to pass judgement on his peers and that's not fair.
Uh, that is exactly why I made the post! Lol. It would be much easier if I just wanted to say, your friends eat animals because they're assholes. My entire point was that I want to find an explanation that is honest about our reasons but doesn't make him think less of his meat-eating friends.

Oh I forgot to touch on the bed sharing. I wouldn't have minded bed sharing so much if that didn't require her nursing allllll night, forcing me into uncomfortable positions not allowed to move freely. If she were the type to just lay there sleeping without my boob in her mouth, I probably wouldn't have pushed her into her bed and sleep trained when I did.
I really want the carribean food for lunch at work today but its mostly meat well the good stuff is meat
I think pregnants should be excluded from lent when there is good food to be had
You are exempt!!! Everyone over 14 has to abstain from meat except for Invalids, pregnants, and nursing moms. Kids under 18 and people over 59 (I believe that is the number) are exempt from fasting on fast days, but still have to abstain.
I still abstain from meat on Fridays because I feel like I should, but I didn't even try to fast on Ash Wednesday.

This is what I am thinking.
And I don't think it is so much denial. I think it is a lack of money to afford to purchase an animal that was raised "humanely" to eat. The average American family can't even afford organic anything, let alone a local farm raised, well cared for animal.

Oh yeah, I know. I offered some suggestions (since you asked for them). But it seems like you haven't really responded to anyone's suggestions since they don't include saying "people who eat meat don't love animals" (cryptically). I think you really want him to know that loving animals = not eating them. And you can pick that, but the concequence will be him judging.
I no dobut think my girls will be judged eventually by someone for not going to church. That's the choice we made as parents. And hopefully she'll be equipped to deal with it and we can work through it together.

I'm just pointing out that it's a different mindset either way. That statement seemed to insinuate only dogs and cats are cared for. I felt the need to clarify that most omnivores are grateful for the life of the animal's life that they are eating and do have compassion for it's life.
I think there is a lot of denial regarding how the vast majority of commercially produced animals are raised and killed.
Maybe? I'm completely aware of how they are raised and slaughtered. It doesn't mean I don't have compassion for them and wish it were different. However, I am an omnivore. If a child said something to my two year old about eating meat and making him feel judged about it I, would have a serious problem with it. I would expect it to be handled just like if L asked me why so and so doesn't eat meat. I wouldn't phrase it in a way that could cause him to make judgement on another child and their family.
I don't even like co-sleeping with my husband, much less a pack of wiggly, hot, squirmy kids. My preferred sleeping situation would be a room all by myself with completely sound proofed walls.
I had a dream the other night of me having my own room in my next house. Seriously. I don't like being alone in the house, but I like sleeping alone. Don't touch me!

Yes. And a fan. And open windows In winter/ a/c set on 62 in summer.
Eh, jfh your vegetarianism is part of your belief system. I don't think there is anything wrong with telling Kai that your family doesn't eat chicken, the end. Other people do eat chicken.
We tell Thad that we go to church and other people don't. We don't explain why. His cousin crosses herself, we don't. Well, I actually like when he tried to cross himself. It was cute.
I'm not a big fan of giving a ton of gray over things that are important to me right now. I can emphasize loving everyone and treating them compassionately without trying to explain the finer points of The Jungle or Presbyterian theology.
I'll always offer him more information if he asks but they are 2. He CANT understand yet.
I wear my pjs or yoga pants a lot if I'm just staying home all day, but I always try to change to "real clothes" if I leave the house. I think if I left the house more often then a couple of days per week, I would be more okay with wearing sweats and stuff in public. However, after I have the baby, I'll only wear sweats and yoga pants since that will be all that fits comfortably and I don't want to try to wear jeans right after a cs, screw that. Another reason I personally don't wear yoga pants in public is because I always get dog hair on them and I don't want to be in public like that.

My kids don't know what a penis is yet and I feel like I'm dropping the ball on that. Do any other moms of girls have this issue? WE were listening to Amy Pohler's book on tape (they weirdly wanted to) and it was the last chapeter where she talks about her son asking about if she once had a penis and she said PENIS a million times and I thought "this is it! they will ask what a penis is!" But it never happened.

@dixeeedeluxe L doesn't know about vaginas. It's never come up and I am ok with that. He never references his penis, either. You aren't dropping a ball.
My dad used to work on a pig farm. He says they are assholes lol. I imagine the little dwarf ones are probably different than the food raised ones though.

I just wrote a long response and PB ate it, arrrrg. The phrase you have quotes around is not something I have said or would say to Kai. I don't believe that loving animals = not eating them. At the same time, we don't eat them because we don't want them to suffer. I understand Sara's point that maybe that somehow implies that those who eat meat DO want them to suffer. So I'm trying to find a better way to explain it to him. I don't think you really understand.
And @thadsrad I'm a big believer in telling him the reasons for our choices.

Lol I would just wait until one of them brings it up. Ada doesn't know, but I imagine when the new baby gets here she might ask some questions.
jfh I get that. I would want to tell him my beliefs too. I just don't know that I would connect it to talking about the chicken his friends were eating. I would probably find a book or something if you can?
We do the "in our family we believe" a lot at home and especially in our bedtime talks. But, I try to keep that out of discussions about little friends because I really don't think they are capable of understanding that their friends aren't just like them.

I think it's been said here that we're not thinking your views on animal cruelty are out of line; just not age appropriate. Thus, my suggestion to talk around it for a little while and focus on perceived positives "science is cool, look at all the foods we DO eat" "look at all the different kinds of TEETH animals have and what their function is".
I just think that'd be a really cool way for young children to learn about diets and later you could bring up heavier subjects like treatment of animals. Know what I mean?
I do agree that telling reasons for choices is so important. But I'm not going to tell my kids why I don't believe in religion just yet. It's just too dark for their awesome loving incredible brains to process. That will come in time and we'll talk about it as much as they want to.

Yeah, this is the problem. It was fine talking about it in the abstract, but yesterday was the first time it's come up in the context of what others were eating.
I want a farm with lots of animals, but I don't want to do the work that comes along with owning a farm. Basically I want a petting zoo.
A petting zoo someone else takes care of. lol. I just want to pet the animals all day. lol.
I eat meat. Ive been to commercial slaughter houses and have seen the said animal be slaughtered. I also love animals.
Repeating others, it is a choice. I don't look at vegetarians and tell Wyatt that they don't eat meat because they love animals more than us, if he asks I tell him everybody has a choice and that is theirs. There is nothing wrong with that.

This is pretty much our plan. Haha well, DH's. He wants to buy land and move outside the city and buy animals. I told him I don't want to take care of them thought, just play with them.
But they stink! Farm animals are so stinky. My aunt/uncle own a farm and their entire area stinks like cow and pig shit.
Hmm...maybe I would just own the property, which would be far enough from my farmhouse so that it wouldn't stink near me, but close enough that i could drive my golf cart there to pet and feed them.
Perfect plan. Maybe the pool boy/ animal feeder and poop scooper could do it, then you need a second golf cart so you can go pet them.
