I loved loved loved this episode!!! So much happened, too.
Mr Carosn and Mrs Hughes (was there ever a Mr Hughes?) So adorable! Mary and Edith holding hands! Tom looking so dashing! Enough awesome zingers than even my H was laughing throughout (usually he only tolerates downton)! I didn't even roll my eye too hard at the Bateses storyline. Although, it has got me calling H Mr Tuesday. Why does Anna called her husband Mr Bates?! Mary flirting? Was that what it was when she asked the visitor to visit. Heck, I think she was practically begging. I'm sad that Rose and Tom are both moving to America. I didn't see it coming for Rose. I've really come to enjoy her. Hearing the full story of what happened in Russia. Oh what could have been...
My favorite line "we were Edwardian!"
Ok,now I must go to bed, I just really had to get that off my chest
Loved it, but I don't have enough closure! How am I supposed to wait until next year to find out what really happens to everyone? I'm not sure if I mentioned last week, how I noticed a look from Tom that made me think he knew Edith's secret, and this week confirmed it.
I am mostly SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE about Carson and Mrs Hughes, but I am also boooooooooooooooo that Isobel has definitely turned down Dicky Merton. I really wanted them to get married.
Matthew Goode is yum, they'd better bring him back next year.
I thought the carson/mrs. hughes thing was so funny! Do you think they could ever make themselves kiss? hahaha. I <3 them though. Not sure why they brought an illness in to Lord Grantham... precursor to something bad happening next season? I love how Rose's character turned around from awful to awesome. Sorry they are leaving. I wonder if they are out for good, or they will just carry the storyline there?
I was convinced for a moment that they had decided to kill off Lord Grantham and have Tom change his mind about leaving at the last minute (leaving him to take charge of Downton as the man of the family). I had convinced myself it would be worth it by the time we learned it was just an ulcer.
I don't get Mary's new suitor thing... why was she interested in him? There didn't seem to be any real reason for her to be particularly attracted to him. Obviously she thought his actions were boorish and low class.
I think she's interested in him because he proved he could be devious and very observant - a good challenge for her.
I think Isobel is dead wrong to turn down Lord Merton because of his sons' objections, saying she doesn't want to come between them. At this point, his relationship with them must be shot to hell either way: he'll certainly blame them for losing her. Now he gets rejected along with it, and she doesn't get to be happily married.
I am so tired of Anna/Bates/legal troubles.
Love Hughes/Carson. They deserve some happiness.
Rose was so quick on her feet to save Atticus' Dad, though I'm not convinced he deserved it. Very resourceful. Too bad Robert was a bit slow on the uptake.
Mostly I can't believe we have to wait another 10 months to find out what happens with everyone.

Really? I can't imagine being married to someone whose family hated me. I think while Lord Merton is probably pissed as hell at his sons right now, ultimately they are his children and I totally understand not wanting to be a wedge between that relationship. How happily married can you really be in that situation?
I think it would also depend on their living situation. Are the son's living in Lord Murton's manor home? So that, like Downton, the family would be together so often? Or are they off living their own lives? The first would be unbearable. The second? Meh, they might could get on.
I did learn something MM related - there were private "retirement schemes" even back then. I'm guess the word scheme had less of a shady connotation then. And look at Mr Cason being all MM - you didn't save any money?! Lol
While I'm cursing the late night so I'm very tired this morning, I'm so very thankful I did stay up to watch.
While I'm happy for Carson and Hughes, their relationship is just SO AWKWARD for me. I was holding my breath waiting to see if they kissed, and I'm glad they didn't--I would have been all "ewww!"like a teenage girl if they had. Professionally, I love their relationship, but I just can't see them in a love relationship....for now. I hope this is a story line they draw out next season and maybe in the Christmas finale they celebrate their wedding.
Is it confirmed that next season will be the last? If so, I am still very sorry that they have two major characters in Branson and Rose leave the show NOW and not stick around for even part of the final season. (I also watched Nick Stokes' final episode on CSI yesterday so I was weepy to begin with, now Branson and Rose?) The Sybil Circle had me balling like a little girl, and though I did think it was borderline inappropriate for Lord G to ask if Sybbie could stay awhile longer, I was still glad that he asked and glad Tom refused. Solidified for me that Lord G loves Tom like the son he never had.
Was so glad Rose was so quick on her feet with her FIL's mistress, but at the same time, I was a bit miffed that it took something like THAT to make him stand down a bit. Thomas took revenge to a whole other level with that little scene...WHOA. Glad our bad guy is still very, very bad.
I was glad that it seems, for now, that the Bateses legal troubles are behind them. Let's get them pregnant now, because I don't want or like them sad and mopey. Same for Edith--I hope next season continues her happiness from this episode.
So, the guy with Jolly Rogers....was he Jolly's chauffeur, or actually his friend? I was a little confused (I had trouble hearing parts of the episode) as to why they were all there in someone else's Castle, or did the Sinderby's buy it? The guy was pretty good looking, so I understand why Mary was attracted to him, and with Tom being gone, the show is going to need more eye candy. I'm in favor of Mary's haircut. But I also want to see Edith's down a bit more next season. (I actually loved most of the ladies costumes for this episode. Very pretty!)
I really have a love/hate relationship with the show. One minute I'm crying my eyes out because I care so much about the cast of characters, and then on the other hand I mock it for the soap opera it has become.
BTW, DH said he read this weekend that Maggie Smith has said she will not stay past next season. Yes, she acknowledged that it is supposed to be the last season, but she sounded dubious that they would turn down the opportunity to renew if given.

If this is true, then I hope SOMEONE has the courage to stop while they are ahead. Compared to the first 2 seasons, the last 2 have been much more soap opera-ish, and without the Dowager Countess? No. JUST NO.
So I read this article that said Julian Fellowes sold the rights to Downtown to NBC Universal, so that they could keep the show keeping. And he said that it was no longer up to him when the show would end.
So that makes me think that this will get even more ridiculously drawn out. It was some article I clicked on facebook. Now i can't find the link.
I totally agree with not being into the Carson/Hughes thing. It's too long between seasons and I forgot they'd had a moment on the beach at the end of last season until one of you guys brought it up last time. So the proposal seemed to kind of come out of nowehre to me. I can see them as best friends or a brother/sister type of relationship so, yeah, I agree with the "ewww!" sentiment.
I apparently completely forgot or missed that Rose and Atticus will be going to America, LOL. I feel like I need to re-watch, my memory sucks.
I also read that they are currently filming season 6 and that YES it is confirmed that Rose and Atticus will be in America for at least the first episode.
I kept waiting for someone to die or something to happen to Lord G' - but it was as happy as the Parks & Rec finale.
The guest that Mary seemed to liked (the inconsiderate one) - he looked so familiar. Anyone know if he's done something notable?
Matthew Goode? He's Finn on The Good Wife, he starred in a movie with Amy Adams a few years back... I think it's called Leap Year?
YES!!! Thank you - I know him from Leap Year.
Yeah, this was not a particularly flattering episode for Mary. I was pretty shocked that Lord G thought they should keep Marigold a secret from her. I mean, expecting that kind of cruelty from your daughter is pretty shocking (by cruelty, I mean that she would tell everyone about Edith & Marigold).

While I love Downton, I do hope next season is the last. I prefer when shows plan for the end and wrap things up appropriately. And I would not want Downton without Maggie Smith. No way.
I liked the end with Carson & Hughes - its about time. I think their relationship is sweet. I am going to be so sad if Tom really leaves. Maybe he will just be gone for a little while and then they will bring him back.
The new guy for Mary is cute. I like him on the Good Wife. I wonder if they will play up the whole him being in the car business with her husband dying in a car accident.
And that other guy - possible Edith suitor??
I'm so over Anna and Bates. I don't care anymore.
I'm sad for Isobel. I wanted that to work out. I can't believe how mean that guy's kids are.
I'm hoping when they said something about it not being Tom's last Christmas at Downton that they were alluding that he'd at least be back for the Christmas episode

OK, I came back to this after sleeping on it and I take back my "dead wrong." I was really focused on her comment about not coming between a father and his sons (and I still think that relationship is shot), but not on how horrible it would be for her to be around them. Also I was thinking more along the lines of our modern American household where his sons would be out on their own and they wouldn't have to see each other often. Obviously it would be horrid if the sons lived with them.
So, now I think Lord Merton should disown his sons instead for being selfish little bastards, and then he and Isobel can marry.

...
Agreed. I like a lot of the characters but she's just the best.

$1M question: Is Sinderby's baby mama Jewish?? I thought Jews don't name their kids after someone in family. If she's a gentile, Sinderby's the ultimate ass. Also, what will happen to the loose lipped butler?
I love how Mary knew that Barrow would be able to concoct a good scheme.
I think Mary's into Matthew Goode because he doesn't make any plays for her. Big difference from Gillingham and Blake who endlessly fawned over her. She likes a good challenge as opposed to something served to her on a silver platter.
When Bates came lurking through the shadows during the Christmas sing along, I honestly thought something horrible was going to happen. The mis en scene was just too creepy. Or maybe it's just that Bates is fucking creepy. That dead stare is brutal.
I can't believe people don't like Carson and Mrs. Hughes together. They're British! And traditional as hell. They've been in love the entire time, clear as day. But maybe you need British affectionless grandparent glasses to see it. I've got that prescription.
I love them together as friends and confidants, but it's weird to imagine them in a sexual/romantic partnership. Like Don Draper and Peggy Olson, but less volatile. I never saw the proposal coming, whereas MH says he's seen it coming for the last 2 seasons.

They're British olds in the early 20th century! There will be no sex! Carson respects the hell out of Mrs. Hughes, and true respect for him is the same as love. Mrs. Hughes loves his stodginess and his good but gruff heart. It's so obvious to me!
I can entertain no such comparisons to Draper and Olson. *shudder*
So are you saying Isobel and Dickie would not have done the deed if they got married?!

Agreed. I think it will be a companionship marriage more than anything. Two long time companions who just want to grow old together as the best friends that they are.
