We are going to start looking at washers and dryers soon. I'm kinda overwhelmed. I know I was want high capacity and a top load washer with no center agitator. What specs are most important? Is there a way to tell how much water they use? Any suggestion or do not buys are appreciated.
My only suggestion is research how large capacity you need. We bought a new W&D in November and I was in awe at how large washers are now. My requirement was it needed to fit my king size comforter. I have a 4.2 capacity washer and it fits the bill just fine.

Id like to be able to washer comforters too. We have most queen size and one king.

We bought a Maytag Bravos XL HE washer (top load) a couple of years ago. I didn't research at all (highly unlike me!) but I needed a new washer fast! I have been happy with it. It isn't too hard on our clothes and it never gets smelly like some of the front loaders (I clean mine with Affresh every time the light comes on and tells me to).
When we moved I bought Whirlpool Cabrio w&d pair. I wanted top load washer w/the highest possible capacity. So far it's been amazing! I love the bulky load setting and the Ecoboost function.

I know you already said you don't want front loaders, sierramist03, but the whole "front loaders smell" stuff bothers me only because they smell if you close them right away after use. I leave my washer cracked open until the inside dries and it's fine. I do occasionally run whites with vinegar and that helps as well. I've never had smelly washer.
BUT you don't want mine since I can't fix it lol. But 7 years is good for a washer these days, I think. My mom had a set for 20 years and when she replaced it, the new set started having issues in under 5 years and she was pissed.

We love our LG ones. I can check the info on them, but we sort of just picked by seeing what was available at the time on sale.
We also went for top loader b/c we blew out the drums on two front loader washers and the top loaders have more capacity and aren't fighting gravity when you overstuff (which I am notorious for doing).

Both my mom and I have a Cabrio set. They're awesome. Mine has the agitator, hers does not. She can EASILY fit a king size, fluffy comforter in hers, I have to work for it. We're both super happy with them, though.
We do! We gotthis Samsung setfrom Lowes in December 2013 and LOVE it. You can probably find a similar model now (this one isn't sold anymore). We got it for $445/each b/c it was being discontinued. I'd buy Samsung again, for sure.
It doesn't smell, either Oh - and edit: The washer is large enough to wash a king-sized down comforter (the dryer is even bigger).

We bought a GE washer from HH Gregg. We wanted the same thing (high capacity, top loader without an agitator). It had the highest capacity under $1000. I have been very happy with it. I also received $75 from our electricity provider for buying an energy efficient appliance. I don't know how much water it uses, but our water bill went down by about $10 a month. I didn't need to replace my dryer.
We had a Samsung front load washer and dryer with all the bells and whistles, steam, sanitize etc. We Loved it. My Husband jokes about how that is what actually sold our last house , the fact we let them have all our awesome appliances. I miss them. They didn't smell or get moldy and we had them for a good 3 or 4 years of heavy use. I can't wait to get a new washer and dryer for this house. I actually think ours is kinda broken because it doesn't agitate anymore.
We have a Samsung set from Lowes from a couple years ago (has it really been that long?); so, this is close to what we have but not exact. We love them. Love. They clean so much and use very little water or electricity. Our clothes smell nice and look clean. That's all I ask for.
