I definitely didn't expect that ending. But I agree it's about time someone stood up to him. Will his house of cards start to tumble?
I really thought Doug was going to let her go. I was wondering how he managed to not be present during Iowa- of course the president was in on it. Or was that part known and I missed it?
I really felt Doug's storyline was very compelling all season. I knew he was trying to get himself back in Frank's inner circle and eliminating Rachel was necessary to earn back that trust.
I didn't find the Clare as UN Ambassador plot to be that interesting and tuned out a lot of the mid-east peace keeping stuff they were discussing. The parts with fake-Putin were entertaining. The suicide in the jail cell was so sad
The storyline with the biography writer was strange but I did find it interesting. Surprised he and Frank didn't sleep together, or him and Clare, lol. Loved how protective of Frank and Clare Meechum is.
oh and Jackie & Remy, love them. I hated seeing her be Frank's puppet. I hope we haven't seen the last of her. I feel bad for her husband and his kids though. She was pushed into that marriage and clearly it was a mistake.
I don't know how Frank can win Clare back unless he has a way to extend the baton of power to her, but that has failed before.
I also thought the Doug storyline was compelling throughout the season, although I was really sad he killed Rachel.
I would have liked more Meechum! The book thing is interesting although Yates' as a character seems dim. I do like Kate Baldwin though!
I didn't like Clare as UN ambassador - that just seemed way too far fetched (which I realize is a ridiculous thing to say given all the other things that happen in this show!)
I have mixed feelings about Clare's view at the end. What did she expect to happen when her husband was president?

To the bolded - my thoughts too. I feel like you can't be as big of an asshole and backstabber as Frank is and not have it come back at you at some point. And of course it's going to be someone closer to you than not.
As for Doug - he hasn't officially been brought on as Franks Chief of Staff yet. I forget when they said they'd announce it, but it wouldn't be expected that he'd in Iowa.
Loved Doug all season - I just love that character and storyline. I think it's interesting how you never have any "breaking the fourth wall" moments with Frank, so you never really know what he thinks of the Doug situation. I think (and hope) his devotion to Doug is deep.
I thought the Yates storyline was a little off, but I think he's supposed to represent the soft side of Frank. Kind of like his "heart" - he likes him a lot, and wants to embrace him and make him a big part of his life, but at the end of the day, Frank can never embrace his heart, and has to shun him.
In the last episode I thought the new-mom storyline was a great parallel to Claire's situation. Instead of being horrified about the new mom killing her child to gain her freedom, she "saw the light" - saw how appealing her freedom was, even if she had to "kill" Frank politically (which is the very core of Frank's being - so might as well kill him outright.
I was really underwhelmed by this season. A lot of YAWN with 20 min of action in the last episode. Maybe I was supposed to feel like the job of POTUS was too big for Frank. I liked him in a twisted way last season. This season he was wholly unlikeable. Also there were so many unrealistic/unbelievable things that happened. Strangely I'm not looking forward to next season.

Whaaaa??? You're already done? Damn, I'm on five but I'm bored.
I felt it was a little yawn inducing too at the end. I expected everything to happen that way. I wasn't too surprised. I will watch the next season but I'm not going to have a problem waiting over a year for it.

I actually felt like Frank and Claire were far less evil this season, which was surprising. I mean these two used to plot murders and sleep around, and they would always come together to smoke by their window and talk about working out. What happened to them?!
Claire was actually really weak and annoying at the end. I always viewed her as the more powerful one in the couple, but the whole UN ambassador thing was ridiculous. She was pissed that she got fired, but really she should never have even had that position. She didn't earn it; she felt she was entitled to it. Then she did a terrible job and made a mess of everything. If it were anyone else, she would be encouraging Frank to fire her. Then, just because you're pissed about being fired, you're going to ruin everything you and Frank had been working for? I loved Doug and think he needed to kill Rachel for his own personal reasons. I mean, she was harmless, but he was obsessed with her. I also love Seth and wanted to see more of him. Meechum, too.

he got what he wanted - the presidency. And I think the whole UN thing showed him that Claire may not have what it takes to be president, so he didn't back her like the original plan.
I just see some of this to show that greed and conniving may get you what you want, but is it really all you expected?

Well, I think the fact that they didn't earn their positions was part of the point. Frank didn't exactly earn the presidency either. Claire partnered with him to rise to the top, but I never got the impression it was because she wanted to see HIM succeed, it was because she herself was ambitious and was maybe ok with success TOGETHER but not just for him at her expense.
I think she helped him get to be president because it meant she would also be able to hold a position of power, and I think she expected him to include her in more of the decisions once he was president too. She's upset because he hasn't treated her as his equal and just does whatever he wants to do regardless of her opinion, and she's just expected to take it and smile and act like she loves it as the first lady. That's just not who she is - she's ambitious on her own and being a prop to a man isn't her style. I don't think she envisioned that being her biggest role once "they" rose to the top. She may have been disillusioned, but I can see where her disappointment comes in.
I actually thought the season was pretty good from a character development perspective. You got a lot more information about who these people are as humans rather than just focusing on the horrible things they do to rise to power. It maybe wasn't as exciting as the first two seasons, but I didn't think it was boring or disappointing.

Sad Doug relapsed to that person. I was hoping he maintained his breakthrough. But no, he went back to frank. Glad that Remy moved on. I liked the evolution of Dunbar from idealistic to just another politician.
I wanted Claire to announce her candidacy or something. I thought all the campaign fervor going her way was a set up for that.

I thought she was going to be the candidate as well!
I also didn't think her tenure as ambassador was disastrous. I just couldn't see the Russian pm asking for her resignation because it would hurt the president, as he claimed - I thought he saw her as a threat because she was good at what she did, and the pm saw it as a threat. But maybe I missed something.
Remind me again what was in the journal? Did she have an abortion?
Yes. She admitted she had an abortion but said it was when she was raped. It was actually much later. The doctor who performed it documented it in the journal.
I feel like Doug has to be the one to ultimately take Frank down to redeem himself. Or at least help someone else do it.
I thought Dunbar was an interesting example how even the candidates who start off with pure intentions and ideals get sucked into the ugliness and backstabbing of politics.
I feel like we just watched half a season. It didn't feel like much happened, and I'm not really sure I will still care enough about it if we have to wait more than a year for the next season. Is season 4 the last one, I hope?
