I haven't gambled the past...8 times I've been to Vegas?
We recently stayed at The Cosmopolitan and before that, the Aria. That area of the strip is where it seems to be happening right now.
We spend most of our time eating and drinking in Vegas. If we're staying in the same general area, we'll head over to the other side of the strip and do some shopping in the mall connected to Planet Hollywwod. There are high-end stores, too, in the Aria mall, but I don't have that budget, LOL.
We've also seen a number of shows, including O and Love (my two favorites cirque shows) and Absinthe.
If you love good food, there is no end of it in Vegas!
Well there was this one place, they might have closed it down by now, where you could watch some lady blow every dude in the joint, get groped by said every dude in the joint just by walking up the stairs, and see and/or participate in every manner of fornication available...
But most people skip that section of the tour book.
I don't gamble. I love Vegas! Shopping, eating, drinking, pool time, spa, etc. The Wynn is my favorite hotel but we only stay there when someone else is paying for it. I've stayed at MGM and NYNY and they were both fine. A hotel room is pretty basic for me, they're all the same. All of the big hotels have lots of restaurants on site, which I love.

i hate gambling. when we went in december it was a quick trip, but we stayed at the best western on the strip (it's right in the middle and has no daily resort fees and was super cheap and perfectly fine, free parking if you rent a car). my h gambled a bit but i only gambled with what free money casinos offered with their casino cards. i won like $50, whatever. we saw 2 shows (cirque du soleil beatles, amazing. and penn and teller at the rio). we ate a lot of food. we walked around and drank a ton. we drove around a little to see freemont street, eat at in and out ( h had never been) and eat at lotus of siam (amazing thai food). that's about it. i'm not a gambler at all but we had a good time.
The first time I took H there, he had fun just walking around all the casinos/hotels. They're each so different and there is a lot to see.
Eat.
Shop. Even though I couldn't afford the high-end shops, it was still fun to window-shop; plus there are some malls with more reasonably-priced stores.
If it's warm when you go, lie out by the pool/drink.
See shows! We loved LOVE. When/if we go back, I'd like to see another Cirque show and a cabaret.
ETA: I'd stay on the strip. I have stayed off the strip when I went with my family, but every day we just spent time waiting for the bus/a cab to take us to the strip anyway.
H and I stayed at The Flamingo and it was perfectly located right in the middle of the strip and was cheap. We went in Dec. of '08 and I think we found an airfare + hotel deal for The Flamingo that was something like $400/person (flying from O'Hare). That was for four nights.
More often than not, I stay at Caesars because it is free for us. If you go there, stay in the Augustus or Octavius Towers. They are the best. Palace Tower is fine. Do not stay in the Forum Tower. It really sucks.
One afternoon a couple years ago, exBF and I went up the elevator and sauntered right into the lounge area/tea room like we belonged there. It was a nice fantasy for a half hour.
Following along- I'm going to Las Vegas for the first time in August.
Yeah. Las Vegas in August. Is that just crazy?
Crazy? Why? Because it's hot outside?
I almost never go outside in Vegas. LOL.
I guess I was thinking about the heat- people talk about walking the strip and needing to bring comfy shoes so I assumed it would be a lot of walking. I have never been so I don't have a great idea about the area or how it is situated. I am sure it will be fine, I live in Alabama so it's not like I'm coming from a cool climate.

I never understand these suggestions because when I'm in Vegas, I'm inside.
And, if I walk, it's also inside or just a brief moment on a bridge between hotels.
But, then again, I'm not exploring.
I suppose, if you're visiting for the first time and want to visit all of the hotels, you'll be walking an inordinate amount.
The only time I'll walk on the Strip is maybe at night. LOL.
Golf, pool, spa, shopping, eating, drinking, shows. Whenever I gamble, I do so in the early morning so I usually have a table to myself. Helicopter tours - but I'm too chicken to go.
We were supposed to stay at the Hard Rock once but they fucked us over on the room so we demanded our deposit back and went and stayed at the Palazzo instead.
Once I lose around $50 I'm out. That's only one drink considering how quickly that can happen. And that $50 could have bought 3 drinks, LOOK AT ME, I CAN MULTIPLY.
I'd rather just people watch than gamble, because that is THE BEST in Vegas.
Oh, if you're staying at Planet Hollywood or Aria or The Cosmopolitan, H and I like to get breakfast in the mall at Planet Hollywood. There's lots of little eateries for far less than the hotels. I don't mind paying $$$ for other meals, but for some reason it makes me ragey to pay $20+ per person for breakfast.
H was STARVING one morning and didn't want to walk over and we had the Wicked Spoon buffet for 38 FUCKING DOLLARS, NO DRINKS INCLUDED, per person. I actually thought that INCLUDED unlimited mimosas and was SO PISSED when they said it was an additioanal $12 per person! Fuck you dude! God I was so pissed. They brought me a free one to make up for the mistake, LOL.

That's why you play the penny machines with $50. You'll be there for 4 hours. Minimum.
