South Congress is a great area. If you're staying North, the Domain is up there - good restaurants and shopping. My new favorite restaurant is Jacoby on E. Cesar Chavez. I also like Seersucker on 5th and Colorado.
Thrilist.com has a lot of lists and different ideas of what to see in Austin. Will you be here for SXSW? There will be TONS going on downtown for that.
I was just in Austin last week for a few days since my boyfriend had a conference there. Here are some ideas:
1. Rainey Street for bars - they are all in these bungelow houses and have a nice vibe. Definitely people were there, but we had no problems getting drinks and having plenty of space for ourselves. Craftpride was our favorite of the places we tried.
2. Easy Tiger - it is on 6th Street at the end. I think on the first level is a bakery and shop, and then downstairs is a beer hall, and outside is a beer garden. Good beer selection and a good casual vibe.
3. Swift's Attic - we had dinner there Saturday night and it was delicious. It was featured recently on "Best New Restaurant" on Bravo and I can see why. We had an excellent dinner there.
4. Home Slice - pizza place on South Congress. There is a restaurant, and then next door is where you can go for carryout. Pizza was really good, and tasted good heated up two days later
5. Torchy's Tacos - we went to the one near UT on Guadelupe, around 28th St. Super good tacos. Two were plenty for me. Try the Trailer Park trashy style
6. La Condesta - Mexican restaurant downtown. I would recommend for dinner. My margarita was really good too
7. ALC Steak - this is a bit away from downtown, but it only cost us $14 in Uber to go there from our hotel. We had a really good dinner there, and my boyfriend was in love with his steak. It also helped we had an awesome server.
I am not really a BBQ person, but my boyfriend ate at Stubb's, Franklin's, and Lambert (I ate lunch with him here too - it was good, but I am not a big BBQ person). Franklin's is an experience for sure - people line up hours before they open at noon and they close when they run out of food, usually around 3 pm. It was a cool atmosphere and we drank beer in line, as did most other people. There is a CVS right there that sells booze. I think Franklin's was his favorite.
For other things to do, the Capitol building was actually quite nice and we took the free tour. We also walked around the UT campus for a few hours, and one afternoon I went shopping on South Congress.
