I have receding gum lines and need a skin graft in my mouth. My dentist gave me the option of a graft from the roof of my mouth or using cadaver tissue. My mom had this done from the roof of her mouth 10 years ago and still talks about how much it hurt and how long it took to heal. OTOH, I'm not sure if I can deal with cadaver tissue in my mouth. WWYD? Any experiences with this?

I choose roof of the mouth.
Although interesting story: I have a friend who had some type of bone cancer and they had to remove part of her heel and graft it. She found out that they gave her the heel bone of a cadaver who was also a convicted murderer.
I had the roof of my mouth sliced up for a procedure (16 stitches!). It wasn't that bad, actually. Uncomfortable for a while, but doable.
As for recession -. Can you shop around? There is a new procedure for this that apparently is better than gum grafting. It's injections. My dentist was telling me about it bc I will require something down the road.
Thanks booby, I'll look into this. I'm not looking forward to this graft at all and would love to avoid it.

I am sorry you have to choose this. I might pick letting all of my teeth fall out and walking around looking like crazy aunt Gertrude without her dentures. Please note this is not the mature responsible response, do it from the roof of your mouth.
Honestly, as creepy as it is, I think I'd go with the cadaver option. The idea of someone cutting into my mouth is pretty much a nightmare scenario, and I'd want to go with the (presumeably) less painful option.
I had that done and used skin from the roof of my mouth. I wasn't given any other option. It hurt but it wasn't crazy horrible or anything. Like Lshoes said, more like a really bad pizza burn.

She was super cool about it. She still had a weird indentation where they'd replaced it. She was grateful.
I can't remember all of the details because we haven't stayed in close touch and it happened a few years before met her. But that part stood out.
A lot has changed in 10 years, so I wouldn't worry TOO much about your mom's experience, especially given the other stories here.
I'm not necessarily grossed out by using donor tissue...the thought never occurs when getting donor organs, so I don't really think of it here, either. I would, however, ask lots of questions about possible rejection. How likely is rejection? I'd hate to go through the procedure only to have it fail and have to do the graft anyway. What are the risks/complications of doing a graft from your own mouth?

did she end up going crazy and becoming a murderer?
I'm glad you have other options to research. If I had to, I'd choose my own skin because dead body, ew. I've had several unpleasant dental procedures, though.

I bet the answer is yes.
LOL.
She's one of the coolest people I've ever met. Just a lot of fun.
But if it had been his eyes she got, all bets would have been off.
I had a graft while I was in college. Cadaver tissue wasn't even offered to me (thank god). My mom drove me straight from my appointment to the airport and I flew to NYC for the weekend. I just couldn't drink through a straw for a few days and was sensitive to hot foods and drinks. I do have a high tolerance for mouth pain but I didn't think it was that big of a deal.
Youll be fine, do NOT use cadaver tissue! The roof of your mouth will heal, but you'd forever have a dead persons tissue in your mouth.
I have severe gum issues and am looking at this for my future. I've heard that scraping your own tissue is horribly painful. IDK, I'm pretty open to both options. My one tissue may be better but I will also happily take gum tissue from cadavers. I'm not creeped out by it? I'm pretty grateful.
