"The moment you play into that, it's an issue ... In technology we live at a rare, fast-moving pace. There are probably industries where gender is more of an issue, but our industry is not one where I think that's relevant.
I am going to disagree with her. My boss' boss advertised my job when he found out that I was pregnant because he assumed that I wont be coming back from maternity leave. I feel like I am taken less seriously than the guys in my company. I was brushed off by senior management and HR when I approached them about my career advancement saying "you could not possibly want to travel because of your young family.."

So her argument is if we don't talk about it, it won't be a problem anymore?
Lol. No.
It's awesome and, I think, a good sign that this has been her experience. But her statements do such a disservice to other women in the industry who do struggle. And it's not like she isn't aware those other women exist. Come ON.

I disagree with her. My company is still dominated by men. A small percentage of the employees are women, but a much much much smaller percentage of the management are women.
The client I'm working with now boasts about how many females and minorities they employ at higher levels. Their CIO and CTO are both women. What they don't tell you, though, is that they have a well-known reputation for paying less than the rest of the market, and unfortunately females and minorities are valued lower in our industry, so they are able to get a "deal" by hiring them. They can't afford to have white male executives at the rates they pay. So with them, even though it looks like gender isn't really a problem there, it still is. They hire women because they can get away with paying them less than they would pay a man for the same role.

I'll give her minor point--in the tech industry, I can think of her, HP, and IBM as all having female CEOs. I can't think of another major industry where I can name three female CEOs of major players in their industry.
But, umm, gender does still matter. I wonder if she's be willing to release the pay difference based on sex for Yahoo to back her statement?
I haven't read the article, but I call BS. I work in a tech company and while we do employ a lot of women, I don't think "gender doesn't matter" here. In fact, I think it is interesting that they just reorganized my team and put all the women on one team that does the worst basic support work (whcih is really what I'd consider entry level work) and the moved all the men onto another team that does larger, more cross funtional and visible project work. Lame.
I'd also LOVE to know the statistics for the pay rates for men and women in the same position here. I highly doubt there isn't a gender wage gap.
