I've resisted it for so long, but I finally joined because an old senior VP from my former company was trying to find me to invite me to lunch! He has a new gig at a different company near my new company and finally got my contact info through another colleague of mine. Obviously, this was a good reason to join, right? LOL.
Anyway, my questions:
(1) Have you ever actually gotten an interview or even a job via LinkedIn? Or do you know people who have? Please provide details to the extent that you can.
(2) Are you selective about the people with whom you connect? Or is the point of LinkedIn to connect with as many people as humanly possible? Please feel free to explain your LinkedIn connection philosophy.
(3) HOW COME NOBODY TOLD ME THAT PEOPLE KNOW WHEN I VISIT THEIR PAGES, AND NOW ALL THESE FOLKS THINK I AM A MAJOR CREEPER?

I've received a few calls from recruiters, even had an interview. I like my company and city too much to leave though. I get occasional requests from people looking for jobs as well to consider them.

1. Personally, I have not. However we have a very competitive intern program; most of the hired interns connected with someone from their target deparetment on LinkedIn. Well before the formal interview, they had already established several relationships, met in some cases, and even had the dept prepare them for the interview.
2. I am selective in whom I select. I am cautious of opening my network to a random person, not within the industry, and have some random person use my name as an "in". I do like LinkedIn for the professional organizations and having an expert base.
3. Yes, there is a premium account that allows the person to see full profile of the person that looked at their profile. LinkedIn will often run a 3 month tease...look who has viewed your profile to get you to upgrade.
I only connect with people I know decently well - either have had a business connection with or significant personal interactions. Within my company, I don't connect to someone until I've interacted with them--it's a way for me to track who I have met and helps me some with remembering names and faces. I do not accept connections with randoms.
I do have some group memberships relevant to my industry--which lets folks see a bit more about me when they otherwise wouldn't. That's potentially helpful for recruiters (although with the Linkedin recruiting platform, you see that even if you don't have a shared group)

1) I've never heard of anyone being hired solely based on their fantabulous Linked In profile, no. However, I was surprised to hear a mentor/VP at my company claim that Linked In is the first place she goes to after reviewing a potential candidate's resume and cover letter. I'm not in a tech industry, and this woman isn't hiring for positions where you'd typically be prioritizing social networking skills. Her argument, though, was that she likes to see that candidates can promote themselves, and that their profiles can provide good insight into their personalities and maturity level. I feel this is valid, but also a good cover for just being nosy in a way that didn't use to be acceptable.
2) I'm still feeling this out. I feel like I should be more selective than I am, but I'm also trying to tailor my profile in such a way that I don't really care who sees it.
3) Ugh. I know. I made the same mistake. And sometimes I get all weirded out when I see that Josephine Blow at ABC Corp viewed MY profile, and then I remind myself that she was probably just being nosy like everyone else.

I have an account but am not very active. I belong to some professional organizations on it where I get updates in my field, and I've connected with a few valuable contacts. My field (state level ed admin) isn't really into LinkedIn as a whole.
DH is active on it and it's been really useful for networking for him. He's VERY careful about who he connects with, there's a lot of client-hijacking in his field and he doesn't want to open his whole network up to people who will use it for nefarious reasons, lol. I don't know if he's just being paranoid.

(1) Have you ever actually gotten an interview or even a job via LinkedIn? Or do you know people who have? Please provide details to the extent that you can. yes, i have gotten multiple interviews, and been contacted by recruiters. my husband is a recruiter and finds tons of candidates on there. i know a lot of people who have found jobs this way - either through their job applications or by networking.
(2) Are you selective about the people with whom you connect? Or is the point of LinkedIn to connect with as many people as humanly possible? Please feel free to explain your LinkedIn connection philosophy. semi selective, but since the point is to network i generally will accept any request that is within my industry.
(3) HOW COME NOBODY TOLD ME THAT PEOPLE KNOW WHEN I VISIT THEIR PAGES, AND NOW ALL THESE FOLKS THINK I AM A MAJOR CREEPER? you can turn this off (as told above) but this also means that you cannot see who creeps on you!
I have gotten a job via linkedin (business analyst). The position was only advertised on LinkedIn, I applied and was selected. I love LinkedIN for networking / staying in touch as people move around.
I've never gotten a job, interview, etc. from it. I don't know of anyone who has.
I will "connect" with anyone I actually know. I usually don't connect with the random court reporters, private investigators, or experts that try to connect to me.
I fucking HATE that it tells people when I creep them.

oh also, if you have linkedin pro or whatever, you can creep anonymously. i know this because my h has it for his job and whenever i have interviews or whatever and want to creep on managers and bosses and stuff, i use his account. lol

I have been stalked by a few HR/business professionals in the area - one who worked at the same company as a job I just applied for. No actual communication, but it's interesting to see who looks at your profile.
Their job board is decent, but most things can be found on indeed as well.
I hate LinkedIn, but have used it to keep up with some of my agency's contracted workers throughout the state.
1. Absolutely not and I haven't heard of this happening to anyone I know.
2. I only connect with people I have met in person at a business event (conferences, meetings, symposiums). So, not anyone I met at a non-work party or outing.
3. I hate that about LinkedIn. Sometimes I want to look at a profile of an MD I'm recruiting but I can't because they would know! Ugh.
I have not gotten a job via LinkedIn, but I do like using it to stalk job candidates
So far, I haven't been selective at all, and have been getting lots of invites from people I don't know. However, 99% of them are in my field, and lots are at organizations that it doesn't hurt to have connections at. I'm still not sure how I feel about it.
Lol! I was just going to PM you to tell you this, in case you wanted to change your settings. I think it's been like 10 years since we've emailed!!
I KNOW. 710!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So, are we gonna be connected or what? LOL.
I don't have time to go through and uninvite one by one. Argh.
Lol! I would've totally accepted if I ever actually went on LinkedIn anymore (especially since it looks like you'll have plenty of connections ), I just still get the email notifications from them. I should probably unsubscribe to the emails, but I forgot my password, haha.
1. I haven't gotten any interviews from LinkedIn, but before I was offered my old job when I started working again last year, my plan was to leverage LinkedIn as much as I could. The gal I hired to rework my resume also reworked my LinkedIn page, which was great. My husband gets recruited A TON through LinkedIn, mainly because of his previous work at a huge ad agency. I think he's interviewed with a lot of folks who found him through LinkedIn, but his last couple of jobs have been through recruitment via personal connections.
2. I'll connect with anyone I'm friends with on FB, and other industry folks.
3. I know. So sad. I have it set to that privacy setting that doesn't allow me to creep as much as I could. Womp, womp.
I didn't use it with the position we just filled, but my boss looked at it before we interviewed folks and said that some people had work experience on their LinkedIn that wasn't included on their resume, which we both found odd.
